I watched DIY SOS the other night, and as I had a free day today and I'm not doing much for the rest of the week, plus my mums away for a few days, (she wouldn't allow it, she won't be too pleased when she gets back either, lol) I decided to strip my bedroom out, and chuck pretty much all the furniture away, lol, mainly wanted to get rid of the bunkbeds in favour of a pine double bed, and repaint the Walls, and put some shelving up for DVDs, magazines etc, as I don't want anything on the floor, anyway, I put one shelf up, put a few magazines on it, and it fell off the wall leaving me with some big holes to repair, lol, the Walls are made of wafer thin plasterboard, any ideas how I should be fixing the shelves to these Walls? Thanks.

What did you try to fix them up with?

i would be looking for the wooden up rights in the wall, they should be somewhere around 400-600 centres

once you have found these then use a long wood screw through the plasterboard and into the wood

often looking at the skirting board will show nail holes and give you a clue where they are or tap the wall with your hand and aim for the dull thud

Best to locate the wooden batons in the wall and screw into those if you can. If you tap along the board you will be able to hear the sound change when you get to each one, usually about 2 foot apart

Buy a ready made set of bookshelves (dirt cheap at B&Q) stand them over the new holes in your walls, fill with porn dvd's and car mags

Sorted

I did try fixing them on with some wall plug type things which I was told should be fine for plasterboard in b&q, but the plasterboard is stupidly thin, i just knocked all the way along it, its only a 5ft wall, and it sounded pretty hollow, I might just rip it all off the wall, and screw some nice chunky bits of wood behind it, where I want to screw the shelves too, then put some new plasterboard on? It's got to be fairly strong as I just decided I want a telly on that wall.

Unless you are any good at plastering, it's not going to end well if you do that.

I've done a few DIY jobs, ripped a few plasterboard Walls down to replace them, and replaced a ceiling for someone, I've had a go at plastering a few times, I think I'll be ok, what's the worst that can happen, lol.
