Having put a few pence away I'm now looking for my first 'modern' car (Under £10K) to buy before this summer. Something with real grunt, comfort and style are the guidelines i'v layed out.

Not a 2 seater sports car as per your title, but meets all your criteria and more. E39 M5. Wins hands down.

I've not read all of this thread so it might be that this is suggested elsewhere but a Lotus Elise will cost you about £8-9k and is the best two-seater on the planet - no exceptions. Obviously minimalistic, not massively comfortable, bloody hard to get out of and with the engine mounted about eight inches from the back of your head, it's noisy too but personally I find all that appealing.

It will out-handle just about any other car on a twisty road, it's forgiving and it won't put you into a ditch unless you really insist on it but most importantly of all, it will leave you with a huge grin on your face which is surely the raison d'etre of a two-seater...

A friend of mine got a 2001 Audi TT for around £4000 and it had a few mods like LED brake lights, New alloys with stretch tyres, BOSE sound system etc, although one shortcoming was that a wheel bearing was dangerously loose and could have caused the car to sustain some serious damage had the wheel become too loose but the car was a steal, they have 4 seats technically but i think a child would struggle to get into the back as they have absolutely bugger all headroom.

A TT is definitely up there and is a serious consideration. Price wise they're relatively cheap, they are nice when tastefully modified, plus they go psssht.

Hairdressers car though. Still in with a shout though

If it helps, I ran a VX220 for four years and it wasn't totally impractical.

It could carry about £60 of Tesco shopping when a previous MX5 could squeeze in about £110 worth.

Great fuel consumption in everyday use [40mpg easily if you want to cruise off somewhere on a weekend].

Quite comfortable actually - especially 'because the tank is Mini-tiny so you have to stop every 200 odd miles anyway.

Noisy as hell [wind noise 'because it's a bloody Lotus!] I used to wear ear plugs on a motorway.

Phenominal acceleration [King overtaker! ... If someone doesn't want to be overtaken, by the time they've decided that, they have been!!]

Not forgiving if you get it out of line - you have to get it back - that's a transverse mid engine for you!

Same under braking. I used to treat it like a 911 - do everything early; brake early, turn in early, accelerate out ... oops, not yet ...

Pretty as a picture! Everyone looks and schoolkids point but it's a plastic sports car with no bumpers so it frightened the life out of me in everyday London use - any parking accident stood to be £3,000 minimum - so I never had one!

Can't see why some people are hung up on conforming to stereotypes. Shallow minded?

Other than it (and a lot of other cars) being classed as 'hairdressers cars', i'm not a fan of SLK's in general. Had I been a lover of the Mercs however I would not let a ridiculous stereotype/opinion put me off any car that I liked.

Point proven in the fact I'm still seriously considering both the Boxster and TT......in pink with those cute eye lash things you can stick on. Ooooooooh
