on the way back this evening the mini was really down on power under load and everytually it got really hot.

the garage did a compression test and found there was nothing on cylinders 3 and 4.

so we are now looking at a new head gasket.

garage have quaoted £315 all in, including a head skim and everything even down to antifreeze and oil. Although he did say if there was damage to the valves etc it would cost more.

i know the garage is well trusted and reliable but does this seem like a fair price for the work needed???

gasket , oil and filter probably around £40 - £50
head skim was £30 last one we had. Very rare they need one.
Good workshop should be able do whole job in 2 hours. @ say £50 per hour

whats that £180 total, I'd say no more than £230

It is an easy job to do, but obviously requires tools , especially a torque wrench I suppose if somebody hasn't got access to the correct gear tool costs can mount up.

i would definitely have a go myself if i didnt need the car done ASAP as it's my daily driver, i think the garage said without a head skim it would be £240, but to be on the safe side they recommend one.

i just hate the feeling i might be getting ripped off, they have worked on my cars before and they have always been very reasonable, buut i just thought this seemed a little too expensive.

it's a shame your not closer mini danny as i definitely would of taken you up on that offer, thanks anyway

Yeah as Dan says, half a days job at the most and it means you can put everything back how it should without it being damages by a garage rushing the job :)

AND it is alot cheaper.
