I got in my car yesterday and was about to drive home when I realised that the seat belt wouldn't wind out?!?!

I pulled and wiggled it but it had no effect, so I had to drive home (30 mins) crapping myself and it didn't help when a police car drove past me!!! :)

So when I got home I took the seat belt off the car and took it inside for some investigation work. I removed the cover and looked at the ratchet mechanism that locks the seat belt. I forced it open but still the belt didn’t come out??? I couldn’t remove the mechanism as it was a star screw so left it alone.

But the other side was held in by 2 cross head screws but said "Do not Remove" on the cover. Did this dissuade me, oh no. I did realise that it might say this as it had a spring inside. Had a peek inside and it looked like a metal disk, ah no spring I thought! So as I opened it it exploded! That metal disk was a tightly wound strip of metal :nugget:

After 10 minutes of rewinding the metal strip I manage to get it back together but the seat belt still doesn’t work? Why do I bother? :)

So perhaps not a good idea to fix it myself then Siggy?

I was thinking a similar thing myself so, a new seat belt was acquired at Brighton when I was doing the run.

Better safe than sorry!!

Cheers Guys

Its also a bad idea to buy a used belt. If the car had been in an accident, you do not know if the belt is OK to reuse. The only way to test a belt is by pulling it apart till it breaks
