Hi guys need a bit of help. I have a 1985 mini Mayfair 998 all standard. The problem I have is that after driving it today when I use the engine braking there is a banging under the car on the floor just behind the front seats. There seems to be the smell of exhaust fumes in the car now and I think I can see a crack just before the first box on the exhaust. Could it be that when letting the engine do the braking the change in pressure is causing the pipe and box to jump up and hit the bottom of my car?? Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers in advance

Sounds like you've got a dodgy top engine mount which has led to a cracked exhaust, get hold of your rocker box and see if your engine will rock back and fourth.

I'll have a go of that in a bit and see how I get on. The exhaust itself looks absolutely ancient so hopefully it's just the age that has caused it. Cheers mate.

Oh and if it is the engine mount how much of a tricky job is that to fix?? Thanks again buddy.

The engine rocks back and forward and the exhaust has just fallen off haha. What are the implications of taking on the replacement of the exhaust and fixing the engine mount myself. Is it a hard job ??

Engine mounts themselves are very easy to replace, all you need is a couple of ½" spanners, axle stands (or ramps), a trolley jack and a hefty chunk of wood. Optional tool - but highly recommended is a long pair of long nose pliers - thier use will become self evident.
Put the car on ramps / stands, loosen off the top & bottom steady bars, put jack under the sump, pop your chunk of timber between jack & sump and take the strain off the engine mounts - then remove mount (3 bolts & 2 nuts & bolts per side) & pop a new one in - sometimes you'll need to "joggle" the holes to line up with a screwdriver, but most of the time easilng the jack off a little lines things back up.... easy £10 quid job.
The bushes on top & bottom steady bars probably shot too - simple job, cheap too
When thats done consider investing in an ultimate steady bar too...
Assuming you've got a "peashooter" exhaust on, then replace just after doing the engine mounts - again a very simple job...
