On monday when i logged into my works email, i had a mail from my own hotmail address, telling me that i had been robbed at gunpoint in Madrid and needed money.

The mail must of sounded quite convincing, as i have been inundated with calls from friends family and colleagues checking of i am ok! A bit embarrassing!

So I am still locked out of my own hotmail, despite reporting the issue to hotmail that i have been hacked etc. No response. and no contact info for them either.

I am also locked out of my facebook, again despite trying in vain to reset my account password with an alternative email. With this method you need to wait 24 hours to log in, you get a mail link which you can click on and it tells you 22 hours and 22 minutes until you can sign in using this new email. When the time is up i try to log in and it tells me the email address doesn't belong to any account! Dickin hell!

Spotify is up and running again, woopy doo. I was actually able to speak to someone there!

I thank Jehovah they havent hacked my TMF account (yet)!!

Any experiences with this kind of thing? and any advice!

I would love to meet the culprit!

I had an old hotmail account hacked but not everything at once. Do you use the same password? Most people do. If you have eBay and PayPal on the same email address I'd be changing them pretty quickly!

It is a bloddy joke! paypal and ebay are on a different account so its fine! I dont use the same password for all but the "hacker" has been able to reset the passwords on facebook etc as they were linked to my hotmail!

my last mail to the good guys at hotmail -

Can someone please help me with this request, despite having reported the issue over 48 hours ago, I still havent been given advice on how to take control of my own email account! The person who hacked my account continues to send fraudulent and scam emails to my contacts, on the pretence that I have been robbed in Spain. I am receiving may concerned calls from my contacts. I am also worried that someone might actually fall for the hackers scam and send them money!

This is actually getting very serious and I am pleading with some one to aid me in gain control of my account /my identity and safeguard the money of my contacts.

And their response -

Dear Craig,
As previously stated, the Windows Live ID Moderators can best address your concern. Due to this reason I am closing your case, and any future requests for this issue will not be responded to.
Sincerely,
Peter

When it happened to facebook.

I sent them a message and they gave me the reply they sent to you because they "assume" that its a fake attack or someones friends trying to gain access or hacker.

But when i ignored there response and gave them a real formal email and mentioned i shall be getting the police involved

They soon sorted it out... :whistling:

Sounds similar to the email i got -

I made a quick trip to Madrid Spain on a short vacation unfortunately i got mugged at the park of hotel where i stayed, worse of it was that my bags, cash, mobile phone and credit cards were all stolen at GUNPOINT leaving me penniless right now.

It's was a horrible experience for me and i need help flying back home, the authorities are not being 100% supportive but the good thing is that i still have my passport.I need some cash to settle my bills and get on flight back home. please let me know if you can help.

I'm freaked out at the moment..

Craig

Hotmail is rubbish for security. Once you gain access to your account, I'd close it and move to Gmail.

Good luck getting it all sorted, Microsoft aren't well known for their good customer support I'm afraid.

There is high amount of this happening at the moment.

One of the users at my place (IT manager here) had exactly the same thing happen to her. Same email to all her contacts, Hotmail accessed and facebook hijacked.

Unfortunately it does purely comes down to a 'judgment based' attack, in that it was a phishing email or a pc somewhere was simply left logged in somewhere.
These are not Hacks as such.

The lady here went on holiday 2 months ago and used a shared PC at the hotel for internet access... it was mostly their that someone got access to her account, and they have just sat on the details for a few months.

It took Hotmail till today to give her access back to her account, see filed the request on Thursday!

Also the perpetrators are pretty savvy, and although i had a 2 day email conversation with them (posing as a concerned friend) they will not give up any traceable details... the best i got was a Western union number...

Out of interest was this the email that they sent out?

The customer service in poor to non existent, I know that hotmail is a free service; but you would be hard pushed to find a computer user who isnt a microsoft customer in some guise! They have really been disappointing!

You could contact the ISP that the IP address resolves to and let them know what's happened. Unlikely to go anywhere though.
