Hi guys, is it possible to fit a start stop button? (I've put a link below to be clear what I'm talking about) :P I think it would look great on my dash, just wondering what sort of kit you needed to do it? And how secure is the system (not sure if anybody could just jump in the car and start the engine)...

Any info would be great, thanks

Something like this is pretty easy, although you would still need the key on the column to disengage the steering lock

The one I posted, basically take the wires that feed the coil and run them through the toggle switch.

The wire that goes to the starter solenoid or relay run through the push button.

The start bit is easy and has been covered many times. Yes you still need the key to disengage the steering lock and turn on the ignition for security and (possibly) insurance cover.

You will need some additional electronics though to use the same button for stopping the engine. (I use the key)

My button operates a relay which is wired in parallel to the ignition switch start pins, therfore using the same circuit as if you had turned the key.

If you need more detail, let me know.

I like that switch, where did you find it? I will be adding a hidden kill switch but that will be a set of 3 three way toggles. You have to know the right positions to start the car. It will set off alarm if its wrong and starting is attempted. Got idea from The Road Warrior movie. Works well on my bike.

If you feed the ignition through the toggle switch then you just have to knock it off to kill the engine.

It is extremely dangerous, and illegal for obvious reasons , to modify the car so that the ignition can be on while the steering lock is engaged. Run it through the toggle if you want but if you also bypass the steering lock switch, remove the lock physically and find a different way to satisfy the C&U requirements for immobilising the car.

This whole dash kit looks good, where did you get it from?

Yeah okay mate, didn't really think of it like that, I will remove the lock and put on some other sort of device if I do decide to fit it, thanks for the heads up

Hi Elliott

The switch panel came from Minteriors. Bought it at Stanford a while back. Note: I've only dealt with them once and had no issues, general opinion seems to be "buy at a show, not mail order"

I updated the "fake" carbon to a piece of real carbon sheet.

If I can give any advice if you are wanting to do this. Keep the standard steering switch & lock, use this for security & ignition & just use the button for starting.

What I can't figure, is why you would go to the trouble of removing a perfectly good and purpose designed security feature, simpy to replace it with an alternative option.

So the question therefore is, why have a start button at all?

Well, I have the button "just because I can", there is no tangible benefit whatsoever over the key as far as I can tell on a standard road car, I just "like it". Doesn't mean I'm prepared to compromise the security or safety of the car in doing so.

As I've said many times before on the forum, your car, your choice, enjoy it. But be safe.
