It will be the first time I have attempted such an undertaking
and I would welcome any advice/tips to avoid any problems.
Step by step instructions would be a god send

Anyway back to the topic. I suggest using the haynes restoration manual/ haynes manual for the mini. I used it on my last restoration when taking the engine out was a great help. The only problem i found when taking the engine out was removing the driveshaft retaining nuts which are a BEEP to get off. Use a really long scaffolding pole or something on your breaker bar and it will undo like a dream. It does seem like a daunting task removing the engine but it is quite simple when following the haynes manuals.
Good luck

Like Dan says no need remove the hub nuts.
2 ways
1.Undo the top balljoint and pull the drive shafts out of the way byt tilting the hub.First seperate drive cups off the diff outputs.
2. Leave hubs alone.Seperate the drive cups off the diff output and then twist and pull the engine from side to side to disengage driveshaft assy. Can be more fiddly but not to bad

Really wish members wouldnt have a go at new people about putting up posts that have been written about before. Doesnt encourage people to use forums if other members just have a go at them!
THIS
It annoys the crap outta me

Everything you undo has to be done back up and this creates a mode of failure, in the case of ball joints this is potentially dangerous.
Why undo things you simply do not need to do..... next you will be removing the rear wheels just to change the spark plugs !!!
