How have you matched the compressor and turbine maps to the engine?
What have you done to the engine to account for the additional airflow from the turbocharger?
What compression ratio have you gone for?
How will you fuel the engine?
Is this just a track car or do you intend to SVA?
Where do you keep the pigeons you use to supply your welder?

OK, so the last line that I wrote there is the one that really got the bite, and with my hand on my heart it was just an off the cuff comment that I shouldn't have made... Apologies - genuinely I take it back.

I got onto the IVA thing because you were talking about (I thought - wrongly as it turns out) that you were going to drive the car to a show or something - based on what you had written. I did ask you if you were going to IVA and you didn't respond - I guess because you had seen red - so the assumption was that you were choosing not to do so.

Dear SukiDawg

IVA Will have to be done before mot if to be put on road, this vehicle has been off road for a couple of years and if i do decide to put it on road all required tests will be taken but for now id like to keep it as a track project to perfect my skills which as youve pointed out arnt the best but considering id never touched a welder until started this project, i dont think are too bad, Sorry we cant all be as perfect as you born with a silver spoon in our mouth and have the necessary computer skills to be able to spend 3yrs getting our projects onto cad before actually lifting a tool but this project was done on a very tight budget as something i like to do not just to show the size of my...... wallet!! So as much as i like to hear peoples views and advise, your 'you have to do it this way and that way' opinion is not needed here so kindly go find a big cliff and see how fast you can reach the bottom.

Yours sincerly, dave

I'm 37 years old, and now I do have a (I think) a very interesting and rewarding occupation, but my Dad was a car mechanic before he retired and my Mum worked in the local co-op, so I don't think I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth by any stretch of the imagination. I did get myself to college though and ended up with a degree in Automotive Engineering from Loughborough Uni, and have worked in the industry ever since.. So far on my project I've only spent about £500 - so its not a big bucks job at all.. Yet. It has taken about 3 1/2 years to get where I am, but thats through choice - because I know the value of the 7p's (prior preperation and planning prevents p*** poor performance) and as its something I'm doing for the enjoyment I don't think it needs to be done in 10 days to be worthwhile. Thats a little bit about me and what I'm up to.. The last thing I want here is a big competition on who's got the largest schlong - but now at least you know a little about me... So Hello... I'm called David too.

So - back to the reason we are all here - to share knowledge and make sure that we all do the best work we possibly can with our garage time - why don't you tell us a bit more about your choice of turbo and what not? I have done a lot of pressure charged engine work in my time - including stuff you have no doubt drooled over on the TV and other media - and I don't mind sharing advice etc... Without a shadow of a doubt though, if you've just gone out and purchased a random turbo charger and nailed it to your engine as it looks like you have done there's not gonna be any 1/4 mile time whatsoever, because your pistons will be mixing with the overheated oil in your recently holed and leaking sump pan while you search frantically for the nearest marshall post containing a fire extinguisher.

Research is everything for the amateur builder... Going flying in with grinder and mini-mig is the last part not the first... So if you want to get the most from your thread involving members of the forum with good experience and advice to offer talk to us. If of course you just here so a bunch of 16 year olds could fan your ego in between cracking one out while thinking of female blue peter presenters you might just be in the right place for that too.... Just not all of us....

oh no... we have another IVA freak on the forum... woop-de-doo

I quite like being able to build my own vehicles, have them inspected and register for the road... If that makes me a freak, I'm a freak.

scare mongering all over this forum has had people deleting stuff including pictures to hide nothing more than a bulkhead box! something thats been fine for years untill big-wigs decided they wanted more cash pushing the IVA, rabbling on about it on every forum out theres just going to hype it up. nothing will be able to be done to cars, buissneses will fail all because some useless chatter on various internet forums.

so basicly... sure, you might not like it... but to go on about IVA's the guy never even said it was for the road so quit your belly aching and go scrole your mouse else where.

i think it's more likely to cause problems if people don't follow a simple 8 point rule

if people carry on sticking their head in the sand and pretending the rules don't apply to them we will loose the life line that is the IVA and we won't be aloud to carry out any mods to our car's

what a boring forum this will be then and think of all the lost revenue for the parts suppliers and car builders

Here's a good thread to give an introduction to IVA requirements - even though you don't intend to worry about it right now. I'm petty much the same - not really thinking that the car will be born on the road, but its given me an understanding of the problems people encounter.....

Sometimes when you're building a car there's stuff thats so deep down in the fabric of the car that you cannot change it without starting again - so I've got myself familiar with the requirements so I don't shoot myself in the foot before I start...

http://www.theminifo...est-list-hints/

And if you want to use the car on the track - the cheapest way to do it is on 750 motor club or similar organised track days.. Much cheaper than the "run what you brung" track days.. For that you will need the car to comply with MSA regulations which are available fo free online and worth reading before you start your roll structure build.... If you ever want to know anything about regulations - the MSA publish them to the web. You can find all of the competition rules here:

http://www.msauk.org...sp?article=1122

and specifically the safety regulations about roll cage construction and so on can be found in section K on tha page or maybe here (if they allow direct linking):

They need to go down onto a plate of 3mm thickness directly rather than through the short vertical tubes as you have them I think....

Hey Dave..

Appreciated that PM..... And sorry again for shooting my gob off...

Here's a few more good sources of background info for you or anyone else who wants to have fun building good cars that blow the bloody doors off the opposition! I know it might seem like a wasted expense, but the great thing about books is that they never sufer from hard drive crashes, and you can just look at a little bit of them without having to trawl through 8 million pages of the internet to find what you want....

Also - if do buy one or two of these - don't expect to be able to read the whole lot in the first week. Reference books aren't like story books - you don't need to start the first page and go one by one to the last page... You can just flick through and look at the bits that are interesting as you go. Do that for long enough and you eventually read it all.... I always concentrate on the pictures first!! Its like razzle exceot with cars :gimme:

Firstly - I know you are not building a car with a motorbike engine, but it doesn't matter really - there is loads of great info in this book... It is more about the process of creating a vehicle on a budget in your shed.....

http://www.amazon.co...34267312&sr=8-1

In terms of how to make different parts of a car - how to shape metal and what tools you need to make really cool parts that look so good you surprise yourself silly - Ron Fournier is an absolute GOD....

http://www.amazon.co...34267662&sr=1-1

^ Thats the most general one and the one I would reccomend first... But just so we know about it... He also has a bit of a more specialised sheet metal one too...

http://www.amazon.co...34267694&sr=1-3

The books are really aimed at people in America with more access to better tools, but you can never expect to do everything they talk about - a creative mind can take what the book says and modify it a bit or adapt the facilities that are available though to use the knowledge in your own way.

Lastly - the absoute goddam bible as far as I'm concerned is a book called "Tune to WIn" by Carrol Smith. Buy this one first - 100% pure gold it is. Written by one of the true unsung pioneers of what you watch on telly every Sunday racing round Silverstone or wherever it might be... Again - don't aim to high and think you will be able to just read this book and know it all - but the advice it gives will continue to be a great resource and guide for years and years.... I don't know many true petrol heads that haven't learned masses from this one.....

Note I have linked to a list not a single book - because there are others in the series - but the original and the best is tip of the list......

http://www.amazon.co... to win&x=0&y=0

Word up.

Suki.

Awesome car. Would love to see a few more pictures.

I have collected most of the ingredients for a similar build so will look forward to some more updates :-)

Is this the engine that has a really tall 2nd gear, giving it an impressively low 0-60 time? VTS, I think.

Interesting build, I like the idea of venturing into unknown territory, as said iv never seen a saxo swap. However like sukidawg said what sort of modifications did you have to make to the engine to bolt a turbo up to it? Nice work

Is there any way of relocating the oil filter so that the front of the subframe doesn't have to be modified?
