Hi I am booked in in my clubby for the london to brighton this weekend and last weekend I decided to change the engine top steady bushes (the ones that go to under the brake and clutch cylinders) on the car as it has been a bit loose for a while and I wanted her all fixed for the run.
Sooo I bought some nice purple polybush ones and fitted them, but the one on the engine side of things seems still loose and the engine knocks when I back of the throttle with it in gear.
My question is has anyone had this before? can it be that my steady bar is worn and the bush doesnt fit? And any suggestions on what I should do now with it?
Many thanks, Tom

I would also check the 2 engine mountings (one under the rad and 1 under the clutch housing)..if you can move the engine excessively by hand with the top engine steady disconnected then the mountings will be shot. I just did mine..couldn't believe the state they were in.

Where the brackets under the master cylinders and the one on the bulkhead in good shape? The one on the bulkhead gets completely ripped off and just hangs from the clutch hydraulic line. The one under the cylinders cracks around bolt hole for the steady attach bolt. I had to replace both on mine the upper one from Minispares since it is different on cars with the post 89 servo. The other one I got it from 7 Enterprises in California since it was bolt on and very thick stainless steel.

The common points have been mentioned above. I would check them first.

Remember that the top engine steady is just that..a 'steady' not designed to support the engine, if the bottom steady and mountings are neglected then the extra stress is transferred to the top steady and it's mounting points, fitting solid bushes doesn't help things as this will then just keep flexing the bulkhead mounting...something's got to give.
