Right latest question, my speedo didnt work when i bought the car, got round to fixing it yesterday or so i thought, the problem was the speedo drive gear had rounded off inside and thus didnt stay on the shaft, fitted a new old shaft off my spare engine, and went for a drive, it still didnt work, so i am assuming that its done the same.

the old gear has a dent on one of the teeth which tells me something is stopping it spinning thus rounding off the inside and the shaft is just spinning.

I dont think i can fix it without taking my engine out to gain access so am planning to fit an old bike computer i have, the actual question I need help with is my mileometer, it is going to stay at its current mileage obviously and my computer will record mileage so thats not a prob but for MOT's it will have the same mileage every year, would that constitute a fail or something ?

sorry for my ramblings and hopefully someone can decode it and help :)

Thanks in advance

Where does it say you have to have a speedo?? You don't need to have a speedometer or an odometer to pass the MOT. But legally, (Construction & Use ) you must have a speedo that is accurate at 30 mph to within +/- 10%. But it's not part of the MOT.

well this one is adjusted to my rolling circumference, and when fitted will check its accuracy to a GPS and my mums BINI so will know how accurate it is but with caterhams they use these quite often and are very accurate ( at 60 mph one guy measured it was out 0.26% out and at 80mph 0.18% )

and ok I wont worry too much just keep a track of my miles and add them to my present speedo reading and when my new engine gets built in the winter I will have a working speedo again hopefully :)

Thanks for the help! :)

Wow! That must be a new one - thanks for showing us - no need to be sorry. And it must have a dial glass and be able to be illuminated!! And indeed it must be working - reason for fail is if 'clearly inoperative' - ie if it doesn't work when the wheels are turning..........I would say it is 'clearly inoperative'....

been testing for 22 years :) . anything in that manual that has a black line on the left is new . to be honest all of the manual is bull poo as most things have to be pass and advise and then we can tick the box to say "in my opinion its dangerous" ??????

oh and we need to prove its inoperative . meaning we must be able to clearly see that a cable is not connected . no road test , otherwise it passes

the thing is, unless the mot tester drives it in then its not clearly in operative as unless you drive it then you wouldnt know it didnt work, bit of a grey area.

castrol quiz question. It must be accurate to within 105, be illuminated at night and visible to the driver. always liked the last one.
