Hi hope someone might be able to help, just nearing the end of my first mini rebuild and I have installed a 1275cc engine from a 1992 British open mini classic, with a stage one kit. attached everything up started the engine it runs fine from cold for 4-5 mins then just stops like its run out of fuel? If you then go to start it again it will start and run but not for very long (almost seems that it’s just using the fuel in the float bowl then running out) then if you keep trying to start it after that, it just won’t start? Unless you leave it for quite a while to cool down?

Where the car has been completely rebuilt I have.......

Cleaned the fuel tank

New fuel line from front to rear (and new fuel filter one just out the bottom of the tank and one just before the carb)

New plugs, leads, reset the tappets to 0.38mm

I have detached the fuel line from the carb and turned the engine over with plugs out and there’s loads of fuel comes out the pipe so I don’t think it’s the fuel pump.

The original carb I tried was a hif38 (AAA needle) which had had a rebuild kit, as I had a spare carb (hif44 with BDP needle) I have tried this as well but have had the same problems.

I have run out of ideas what to try next! So if any one could help it would be appreciated

Try it with the fuel cap off, it may be the fuel tank breather's blocked.

Possibly condenser or coil fault.

Try disconnecting the fuel return pipe.

Sounds like a blocked fuel tank breather - er, maybe.

right quick update i have just tried running the engine with the fuel cap off and it makes no difference, (also had a look at the fuel tank i take it that the fuel tank breather is the clear tube that runs from the top of the fuel tank out under neath the car? if so thats got a new tube on it and i checked it and its not blocked)

when you say disconnect the fuel return pipe, which one is that on a hif44? as theres a fuel in, breather and one other nearest the inlet manifold, is it that one?

i'm not convinced that its a fuel supply to the carb problem as, if you disconnect the fuel supply tube from the carb and turn the engine over with the plugs out theres lots of fuel comes through and when the engine is running and after it stops the fuel filter just before the carb is still full of fuel.

is it possible it could be an electrical problem related to a temperature sensor some where? its just strainge that it runs fine from cold and it does'nt run once its warmed up for 5 mins or so.

and finaly whats the best way to check the condenser and coil for fault? (or do you just change them for new ones?)

The one nearest the manifold on the left is the crankcase breather, the little mushroom near the manifold at the top is the vacuum advance.
On the left you'll find also the fuel inlet which is the one at the bottom near the mixture screw, fuel overflow is at the top near to the air filter.
Thats for the typical HIF44 i've seen, some carbs may differ a little.
I wouldnt bother checking condenser, i'm used to just change them. You can test the resistance of a coil, but when it fails, it usually gives good readings then fails under load..

So where ukcooper says to disconnect the fuel return pipe is that not applicable for a hif44?

I think he refers to the fuel overflow, which maybe blocked (unlikely to happen though)
My HIF44 certainly does not have a fuel return pipe..

just going to reset the idle speed now, does 800rpm sound about right?

Hey,

I am glad you got it sorted. Mine idles at closer to 1000rpm but mine is in no means in top condition, and its only a 998cc
