Monte Carlo roof rack if you want it to look good. Otherwise you can try and pick up a bargain one off ebay, usually quite easy to get one for less than £40. There was a company based in the Midlands that was selling new ones on ebay for about £40 which I see a lot on mini's. They don't look as good as Monte Carlo roof racks, but they look strong and are just as good for carrying loads.

If you're searching in ebay, search for gutter roof rack or classic roof rack. If you use the advanced search you can filter out 'bars' which will get rid of lots of advertisements for roof bars.

I use a Thule one, have a basket thing for carrying bags and climbing equipment and stuffs when travelling, and I can also put me bike on the roof if I need too. Mega solid and will hold more than the roof of my car will! :P

If the Mini is your only car a roof rack is so useful. I once used one to move a complete single bed from London to Hitchin in Herts! Got some funny looks along the way, but it was firmly strapped on. It's important to get the type that fixes onto the gutter rails not the roof panel or the roof will dent.
Make sure you always remove it when it's not being used as they knock your petrol consumption back by several mpg which is important these days and they make a lot of wind noise.
