a friend of mine has just bought this

Posted Image

(it's a 1965 VW type 3 notch back 1500)

it's totally original even down to the never used spare wheel on cross-ply tyres

it's a German inport that went to Ireland via the UK and is now back in the UK again but yet to be registered, it's spent the last 20 years in a barn unused by a car collector

it's done about 90k miles but has never had any replacement panels or paint work done, under the hood it's mint and has never been used the boot is much the same no marks whats so ever (engine under boot floor)

the doors shut with a very solid German clunk and everything works

the seats, carpets, headliner etc are all unmarked and as VW intended

the only resto work are change the fuel lines, brake hoses, tyres etc and fresh petrol and brake fluid, then a MOT test and get it UK registered

i was surprised to hear that they are not beetle based and only type 3 parts fit other than a few small bits

being a type 3 and not some many produced as the type 1 or 2 the parts are harder to find and cost a bit more but not imposable to get

the only thing so far he can't get is front wheel cylinders you have to get a rebuild kit instead

tuning wise it's basically a VW type 4 engine as used in a few early Porsche's with a different cooling arrangement, barrels and pistons still just bolt on

i like to play spot the engine with little Bungle, as they have a boot in the front and back

I used to have a fastback and a squareback, both 1973 1600s, and I'm sure the engines were basically the same as the Type 1 apart from the fan and dynamo location. Know as the suitcase engine, the fan was on the front. The cases, crank, barrels, pistons and heads are the same as the Type 1 engine.
The Type 4 is different being built in 1700, 1800 and 2000cc versions of the 411, 412 and Buses. That engine was also found in the VW Porsche 914.

PS Lowering the front end on those is simple, and can be done in a couple of hours. Just loosen the trailing arms from the torsion bar splines, rotate one spline, bolt it back up and check the tracking.

PS Here's a '64 Notch 1500 I spotted at a show in 2010
