I have tried searching for previous posts but had no luck!
Can anybody tell me which oil to use in my 1986 998 auto? I'm pretty sure it was 20w50 but just wanted to check.
Thanks!

A quality 20w50 such as 'Castrol Classic, Halfords, Millers, Penrite. But not the 'cheapie' 20w50 as sold by Aldi, etc., as that will just screw up your gearbox.

Thanks a lot for such a speedy reply! I've got a leak that I need to find and my level is very low! I have a bottle of 'route 1' multigrade. I was thinking of filling it up with this, cleaning the engine so that I can find the leak, fixing the leak and then giving it an oil change.
Is this a good idea?

'Route 1 Multigrade' does sound a bit like what my old engine-building buddy called 'weasel p**s'. But to find a leak it could be OK. Just don't drive it about with that muck in it. For road Minis (as opposed to full-on competition cars) I now use Castrol Classic 20w50 because it's a fantastic oil and I get it very cheaply.
Make sure you drain all the old oil out and fit a new filter. Fill the filter with oil before fitting it so that it is 'primed' for start-up and the oil pressure comes up more quickly.

Due to the clutch pack i believe autos should run thinner oil, such as 10w40?
