dont know why your all worrying.... you would all clearly take your cars to be MOT'd already

take it this way, we have a 1953 series 1 landrover in pristine condition like allot of Pre 1960s cars

it costs £160 a year to insure. tax exempt and MOT exempt... apart from fuel thats all it cost to own it... £160 a year and its great fun and a joy to own

As said there is under 160,000 pre 1960s cars on the road, i also read elsewhere that the % of these involved in accidents due to mechanical failure is 0.01% of all collision in Britain

I'm sure that if one of your family was killed due a bad track rod end then that 0.01% would be a lot more significant :ermm:

why make this the law for pre 1960 cars?.......are they more likely to pass an mot than a 30 year old classic then?, so now they have free tax...........and they dont have to mot their cars, they will be getting free fuel and insurance next!!

hahaha true mate.. seems mad, why does a 1961 mini need an MOT and not a 1960?

Yes it may seem good as it saves money etc but it seems bizarre really.. its like a new motor rolling off the production line without a safety check

Omg yay! I just thought though, I can finally afford an Austin 7 Ruby which I have always wanted  Might only be half a car left because it's awaiting a restoration, but doesn't matter because it's alright!

NO!

whats good for 1 set of classic cars should be good for all of them, it seems that it is a case of the more money you have got the more money you save, so if you have a 1960 mini then you don't have to mot it but if you have a 1961 mini then you do.................where the hell is the sense in that?

Its just daft really, makes no sense!

Bottom line is that if you crash in it then there is no way of prosecuting the person as they have had no one check it over.

all i can say is that there is obviously a load of people in the government that own pre 1960 classics, like i said earlier.....if you can afford to run these cars then you can afford to tax and mot them.

It's only going to apply to 1959 Mini's (manufactured) as its pre the 1st of January 1960, personally I think it's a bad idea, perhaps going every 2 years for pre 1973 'historic' vehicles would have been a better idea, at least that way there would still have been checks

Just because a car will now be exempt from having to pass an annual MOT it won't be exempt from Construction and Use Regs which apply to every vehilce, every day that you use it, so with new(ish) powers like prohibition notices there is still plenty of opportunity to keep unroadworthy vehicles off the road. If you car is in dangerous condition and with defective brakes, tyres, exhausts, steering etc then the Police or VOSA can still take your car off the road or take you off the road via points on your licence so I don't think we will suddenly see an increase in pre-1960 death-traps on our streets or an increase in accidents caused by such vehicles.

But how are VOSA etc going to pull every pre '60 car off the road? Its just not gonna happen man, there might not be an increase with deaths etc but its a daft rule you gotta admit!

Probably done so George Osbourne and Cameron can save a few quid on their fleet of vintage Bentleys.
