If I needed one, I would probably take the small risk.

That said, what part of your distributor is worn out? Does it have shaft play or some other problem? Depending on the type of issues you are having, the installation of an electronic ignition module may restore normal operation without having to replace the whole distributor.

Hopefully i will get it this week so i can fit it next week. I want to retain the old dizzy as a back up just in case. Also for originality sake as well as i did not want to remove the pin from the base plate.

Being 42 years old does not automatically make the dizzy trash. (Being 52 years old myself I don't feel like I'm done yet either). The Ignitor module will forgive a lot of play in the shaft.

Put your engine through a complete tune up. Start with adjusting the valves cold, then make sure all the ignition parts (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) are in good shape, replacing any that are suspect. Examine all the vacuum lines and make sure they are intact and that the manifolds have no leaks. Finally, check that the timing appears "about right" even with the scatter, then check and adjust the mixture. Go back and forth checking the mixture and timing and I expect things will appear better for you.
Once you have that electronic ignition module installed, side-to-side play of the dizzy shaft due to bushing wear doesn't affect the timing as much.
