I’ve got 4 steelies sitting around in the garage and was debating what to do with them – And I’ve come up with an idea.

Turn them into 60’s style wheels

It should be really simple:
  • Clean up the steelies (I’ve got some super strong stuff)
  • Sand them down
  • Mask up the tyres
  • Paint them a beige colour
  • Stick some silver dish centre caps on them from places like Mini Spares (I think they just clip on?)

This would be possible yeeeesss? Or am I getting too excited about nothing lol. I’m trying to give my Mini a slight 60’s feel (not a replica).

I love my pepperpots but want two sets of alloys so I can change dependant on mood :)

Apart from the silver dish caps - this is a stupidly cheap thing to do.

Band them? Eh? What?

Anyway, yeah Im not trying to make a replica, just getting some key iconic features of the 60's :D In fact, this morning I enjoyed a nice trip into work listening to the Kinks in the Mini :P haha.

Banding just means making them deep dish. Send them to a company who will pretty much cut then in half then add a new bit of metal on the middle to make them as wide as you want. I have them on the clubby.

Although if the steels you have are 12" then the chrome hub caps wont fit on to them. If you want 12" steels with a chrome hub cap you need to find some steel wheels of a IMP.

They have managed it over in Japan, so I think you can get the hubcaps. If you can find a hubcap that would go over the centres (some imp ones perhaps, Viva HA or V early mk1 escorts), you should be able to weld/bolt/rivet on some tabs to hold it on. If you go with a set of Imp wheels, they are a lower offset so they will poke out a bit more (not a problem if your running arches still)
