I've purchased an mg metro 1275 engine off ebay the other day and decided today to have a closer look. Behind where the flywheel normally sits i could see the end of the crank shaft. i think thats correct anyway. I've seen usually a small notch in this but mine appears to have this and then 2 larger ones down both sides.

Could some one please let me know if this is usual, or if not it means this part is scrap?

I can't really see - but looks like some one has cut an old flywheel off

with a F1 cutting disk - or something similar - and hit the flywheel taper / slot

It looks fubar - but get us some better pic's - hope I'm wrong

Haha ok i've accepted the fact its useless. Can i save the engine though with a new crank? Apart from that part the rest looks good, it didn't come with a clutch cover or any clutch end though. I bought under the idea to strip it down, check it and rebuild it. I wasn't planning on putting in the mini for another year at least so i would have time to save for a new crank.

Ah that's ok then, got a bit worried when told to scrap it. Is it a false economy to source a second hand crank and have that checked by a machine shop or just try and fi d a new one?

A new one will be a fortune!

You can pick them up on Ebay for 80 quid, you could then have it re-ground or polished.

You could have it balanced.

It would be cheaper than a new one!

Yeah i looked on somorfords website and a new one was expensive so was hoping i could do just a good job with a second hand one. I'm not looking to do anything fancy with this engine but i want it to be super reliable.
