at first start up there is no noise from the fan belt but after the engine gets up to temp it starts to squeal, the belt is as tight as it will go and the alternator was replaced around 3 months ago. I found out i've got a leak coming from my thermostat housing, could it be something to do with this?
It's a 94 cooper spi if that makes any difference

Well seeing as the thermostat housing is directly above it, and it's leaking, I wouldn't rule it out.
Have you checked to see if the belt gets wet at all?

The leak needs sorting anyway, so you might aswell start with that, could well be the cause, as when the engine warms up the thermostat opens so there's going to be water/coolant running through it

Just had a look, the top pullet was soaking wet round the back of it and dripping down onto the bottom, im guessing its leaking from the back of the thermostat and dripping down. Shall i just replace the gaskets or just do the whole housing?

Just the gasket, can't imagine the housing itself failing.

Plus....check the belt. It might not be the correct "V"
I have an an instance of squeeling belt ( tight )....turns out the correct size was used but not the correct profile
( don't over tighten your housing....only about 10lb's needed as I recall )
