Hi...
I have owned my mini for 9 years during this time I've never really looked at the log book. The car was bought from a girl i was seeing for some time so never had a reason to look at it. The problem i have is...my car is a rover 91 cooper...1275 engine. I'm looking to sell the car but when i was showing the car and log book to someone who was interested they pointed out that the log book says its a 998cc? He then said its not a cooper but one dressed up like one? I spoke to the dvla and they said that the log book details are what rover sent to them. Can i tell engine size by the engine number? it starts with a 12 which i thought means 1275 engine? the handbook i got with the car also says 1275 engine.
Hope this makes sense guys...
please help...
thanks
Rob

If it says 12H on the start of the engine code, it's a 1275, strange how the logbook says 998 then...?

You can easily tell a 998 from a 1275. 998's (850's & 1098's too) have bolt on covers over the tappets.
One of these:

it starts with a 12 something. will go check later. The dvla also said to get it changed on the log book I have to get a rover mechanic to write to them explaining this. I'm sure Rover went out of business a few years ago. will photo the engine number and write my own letter i think and maybe get a mechanic to write as well.
Thanks for your help..

Yes, a letter from your local garage, especially a properly qualified engineer or a MOT tester, should carry sufficient weight with the DVLA.
Don't forget to tell the insurance company!

Of course - it may be a '12' number stuck on a 998 engine.....if someone has faked the car up.......... Let's see some pics of the engine..... But if it IS a 1275 engine - no need to send DVLA anything - just explain they got it wrong - you haven't changed anything. Does the chassis number on the car tie in with the logbook ok?

You can end up with the wrong engine size on the log book! I had this with a 2009 seat ibiza! Seat had provided the wrong info to dvla!
Fortunately seat still exist and their dealer who we bought it off sorted it!
Pics of the back of the engine below the manifold will allow someone to identify it for you!

Unless a "S" engine of course
