I'm in the middle of gettin everything disconnected, ready for an engine overhaul. But there is a machined bolt with rubber inserts connected the linkage to the transmission which I cant get my head round. I compared it with my brother's mini (998cc) and hes got a bog standard nut n bolt in his which is simple to remove. But with the Cooper, its a machined bolt with rubber around it, im guessing to try and improve the feel of the lever, but I'm not sure how to get it off.
Ive heated the bolt up to make the rubber melt and managed to get the nut off, dont know where to go from here.
Any ideas??

Thanks

Are you talking about where the linkage attaches to the back of the differential case? If you've got a standard rod change gear linkage it should come off the same way as the one on your brothers 998.

probably a bit rash, but ive cut the head of the bolt off hopin it would come off but it wont, Ive tried liftin the rod up but it only goes so far up and doesnt clear the bolt.

You tried knocking it through with a pin punch?

It looks like the bolt may have seized into the sleeve of the metalastic bush that you burt out. If it has you may have to spend some time under there with a hacksaw blade between the linage and diff case you try can cut the bolt.

You'll be wanting to replace that bush once the engines out as well. Clicky

thats the thing, the bolt is moving around free as you like. The middle of the bolt has a larger diameter than the ends, so it doesnt want to come out!

That piece in the middle isn't isn't of the bolt it's part of the bush that you burnt out. You need to give the bolt a good whack with a pin punch and hammer to see if you can brake it free.

You're probably right, might be worth unbolting that top steady from the gear stick side and them knocking the bolt out once the engine's out.

Is the middle bit the rod link bar is around a bracket on the diff housing? Or is it cast into the housing? Looks like a bracket, but could be wrong. Mine are all remote, so not too familiar, just basing it on the photos.
