Here's my ongoing 1275GT project.

I bought the car in 2000 as a bodykitted, modified beast and it needed some work to get it roadworthy and MOTable.

I spent a few months fixing it up - with a little bit of welding - and got it MOT'd and on the road.

I used it for a year and thoroughly enjoyed it but decided it was getting tatty and wouldn't pass another MOT so I took it off the road for some "light" restoration. :D (This was in 2002)

After stripping it back I found some nasty surprises:

and bodges:

scuttle_corner_rust201102.jpg

and typical rusty floorpans (a sandwich of two footwells on one side for good measure :o)

driver_footwell_gone.jpg

even an awkward roof repair was in order:

Anyway I soldiered on with the cutting/grinding and general cleaning up:

Rolling the car onto its side to stonechip/underseal the floor:

Eventually I was ready to prep and paint - I decided to do this myself (something I've always wanted to do)
I took it back to bare metal to make sure I'd not missed any rot or filler bodges and I etched primed the whole shell.

After plenty more prep/primer/flatting back......

...........then some more prep and flatting........

..........oh and then some more prep work and flatting back I managed to get a good enough surface to get some colour onto the shell. (Don't underestimate paintwork prep if you want a good finish!!)

I decided on a good retro 1275GT colour - blaze orange :proud:

Anyway - that was about a year ago - I moved away from where my workshop is so I'm now having to travel 75miles to work on it. > :( (which makes progress difficult)

Plans are for turbo power running on 12" or 13" revolutions, but otherwise standard looking.

I'm now getting motivated to get it finished and I thought this post would be a good idea to help me - so if you notice I haven't posted an update in months then please give me a nudge ;D .

Hoping to have it finished for the summer (probably late summer - when's Mini in the Park? :D )

Mart :proud:

Yep - going turbo was a decision I made quite early on. I thought if I prepped the shell ready for it then I could at least run with or without a turbo engine.

Looks really nice shame you cant get to it that easily :'(

Still looking for a workshop which is local - but my parents live fairly close to my workshop so I occasionally stay with them over the weekend and get as much done as I can.

I just want to drive it again!!!!

Great job so far. What paint did you use, two pack or celulose? If it was 2 pack what kit did you use?

Cheers

I went for celly in the end due to it being my first spray job and it being slightly safer than 2 pack. :w00t:

I've painted the bonnet on my 205 in 2 pack since and kinda wish I'd painted the mini in it - from a durability point of view.

Actually, thinking about it - I think my paint supplier could only provide blaze orange in celly.

I managed to get some work done on the Mini last weekend so here's some photos:

Got it out in the fresh air.....

Injection Petrol tank fitted - bracket needed fitting to the boot floor.

Clocks cleaned up and brackets mounted.

Bit of brake pipe practice:

Actually starting to look like a car (sort of):

Turbo lump - donated to me by my boss. 2000 miles since expensive rebuild (but that was 18 years ago - has been sitting in his garage since) Apparantly its got a Swiftune head, uprated cam and was rolling roaded at 120bhp (when he had it in his metro). Bit of an unknown to me though. Bores checked with a borescope and they look great and it obviously turns over freely. Couple of castings are broken but I've plenty of spares :D

Long weekend coming up so hopefully plenty of rebuilding to be done.........

More progress - my third weekend in a row on the mini!!

Wiring loom was the next job - brand new loom from Minispares was purchased a few weeks back and I spent some time adding wiring for hazard lights and heated rear screen.

On saturday I managed to source a couple of spare MK3 switch panels and a few spare switches to refurb - this shows the condition they were in straight from the scrapyard.

Posted Image

I've just finished refurbing one (the lower one - rustier of the two) ready to fit. I've dismantled the switches and cleaned all the internal contacts, and cleaned them externally.

Posted Image

I spent a while checking the electrics and all the lights seem to work ok, horn functions OK as does the wiper motor - not bad as they've all been stored for a few years. Clocks need some work though - some of the printed circuitry has fallen apart.

Next stop - turbo engine strip/check and rebuild with new gaskets.........

........or headlining and windows (but I'm not looking forward to that job) :trooper:

How original is your GT? Mine had suffered from loads of modifications over the years and I'm now gradually getting it back to original (ish) condition. I'd love to go back to 10" wheels but I don't want to pay inflated eBAY prices to do so.

Would be interested in seeing photos - I looked at your project thread but couldn't see any photos of the bodywork.
