Ok, something a friend and I have been debating. Given the engine is in the back, does this mean the gearshift pattern is back to front in a Honda or Volvo engine? ie first gear is where reverse is in a std mini gearbox?

Or is the gearshift rotated 180 degrees so it retains is the normal 'H' position it would be in the donor car

Generally the gears are set to work exactly how you expect them to be.
The selectors work eactly the same so unless you make the gear stick work backwards for what ever bizarre reason it will work the same.

the gear selector cables loop under the engine on the vtec (i assume the volvo also) so the actuation is as it was in the donor.
