As the title, there are some rather nasty noises coming from my driver's side front wheel (i think) and i'm not driving the car again until they're sorted out.

I'll try and be as specific as possible so sorry if this is a bit long!

It's been making a sort of squeaky rubbing noise (best way I can describe it) for a while now, which gets faster and slower with the road speed, and seems to have been inconsistent in how loud it's been from journey to journey. Now, it does it all the time, and when i went out yesterday it started making a rhythmic knocking sound as well, mainly on disengaging the clutch but not every time.

Accelerating and braking has 'an effect' on it as well, although again it's been inconsistent on whether it gets louder or quieter.

Hadnt noticed any difference on turning left or right but I will look at this more fully at some point.

Another point is that it has got quieter after raising the front Hi-Los after a while, after fitting new cones.

Finally, I have parked the car up in the middle of making the squeaking noise and cannot find anything obviously rubbing on anything. There is also no obvious play in the wheel when jacked up but I will have another look at that.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Could be as simple as a stone wedged in the disc cover - or in the caliper - but most likely by far is knackered wheel bearings. Lift the wheel off the ground and inspect the big nut on the CV - is it loose?

Checked the disc covers and they're all free with nothing wedged in them, I will have a look at the calipers. Wheel bearings is what I originally thought but have been told other things since. When rotating the wheel jacked up there is resistance some of the way round but the rest of the way it is free, no obvious play from side to side/up and down

The cage has broken up - don't drive the car! It can seize up completely and leave you stranded in the middle of the road.

Ah, that doesn't sound good, is that most likely to be what it is because if so I'll get the bits ordered and crack on with it.

Thanks for the replies!
