Hi there,

I am doing my ball joints at the moment; lapped them, shimmed them with no spring until they span easily with my fingers and didn't snag at all, and then fitted the spring.

With the spring however, I can't spin it by hand and it takes more force to move it. Is it ok? Dont want my wheel to fall off!

Cheers

If it was OK without the spring, then you are good to go! Just keep them regularly greased, something a lot of people forget to do these days.

If it 'spins easily' without the spring - that's TOO LOOSE !! It should 'just' be able to be moved about with a ring key hooked over the shaft - without the spring....... The spring is basically just an anti-rattle device.

I just can't believe that something like that would be engineered so that you had to make it so tight that it only moves with a spanner.

There is no play in the thing at all, and I don't see why it needs to be so very tight!

Fitted the hub for a test today and there is no play at all so I am struggling to understand your advice? Regardless I will carry on!
