Firstly i drive a Black 1978 Mini 1000 with a 1275gt engine.

I have had the car for about a month and have already made some modifications to it, Bucket Seats, Fitted a Dash carpeted it, change the Master Clutch and Slave Cylinders, water pumpm, oil, spark plugs etc! finally got the car 90% how i want it and now its developed a problem along the more serious side of mechanics.

Symptons.

Idle the car sounds fine
Low revs 1-2k a slight intimitent rattle occurs, 3k + rattle is constant

Driving the rattle is louder and more constant however only under throttle, if i come off the throttle is goes, slight throttle its there full throttle its not (exhaust is probably too noisy)

Anyway the car is at Mini Bexleyheath and the guy seems to think the Big ends have gone and will come back to me with prices tomorrow.

so i guess ill be on the lookout for a new engine, its always been my plan to (Charged the engine eventually, SC or Turbo) undecided as to which. Anybody know anywhere local i can source an engine? please PM. or if you have any ideas what may be wrong and help would be much appreciated. (one thing to note the oil was pretty low when the tapping first occured)

Anyway Welcome to Mini ownership i guess, to be honest i love it such a great fun car to drive and tinkering with it with the full Bonnet being able to release is great.

Thank for reading.

I would do a compression check to see what's going. The symptoms do not sound like big ends as they tend to make a heavy knocking noise.

Has the car lost power at all?? its possible the head gasket has gone or is going between two bores causing each piston to pressurise the bore next to it.

It most certainly does.

Hi, i will do a compression test. it just a tapping noise not a knocking noise if that makes sense, when i get the car back ill post up the compression readings.

The Car has lost no power at all, it feels fine just this tapping noise. I had to adjust the fuel ratio as on idle it was very lumpy, thats fine now and throttle response is great.

Have you checked your tappets and rockers and just thinking about it you say it was under load you heard the noise so it could be pinking. Get your timing checked.

Check your mounts and bushes, it may be that the rattle is only happening at certain frequencies made by the different rev ranges.

i'm no mechanic but u say these noises are rattles! there's no way thats big end bearings, they are always a big knocking sound, and on full revs will sound worse if u let off the throttle to half revs then rev straight up again!

Just had the same noise in a 1275 and the sound travelled through the fan. Ended up being the clutch letting go slowly but surely
