my doors sit out at the back ( handle end ) and theres a hugh gap at the top.
where do i put the shim to rectify! mk4 by the way

If your door is sitting out at the back then you need to adjust your latch, no shims there. If there is a big gap at the top then have a look at the bottom of the door. How tight is it to the door step??
To adjust vertically you can slot the holes in the A post to give you some extra adjustment, bare in mind though some door were a rubbish fit from new. I ended up extending the window frame to close those gaps up (see the Project Erm link)

This is a small amount but you may find the putty behind the latch may be preventing you from moving it.

just to check is the latch the bit on the door or the panel?

Its on the panel / rear quarter. The door mechanism is fixed.

as neil said, had this exact same problem with my mini turned out to just be the latches on the body needed moving in further if you loosen of the two screws on the front on the plate which sucures this then you should be able to move it about a bit then just tighten it back up in the desired place!

Are you using the correct size screwdriver to start with (sorry if im teaching you to suck eggs) if you are then an impact screwdriver should do the job.
