I know you must get this a lot but I could do with a more formative answer if possible! How easy is it to replace a standard a+ 998cc engine from a 1986 Piccadilly with a 92 spi? Any help much appreciated as I'm not the most technically minded but trying to learn quickly! Cheers :D

Fairly straight forward engine swap if you plan to use a carb.

i did the same swap on my hornet. i used the original wiring(80's mini). the starter wiring needed a bit of tweeking as the old 998 had the old style starter and seperate solenoid. also there is no water sensor on the spi block, so i tapped a hole into the thermostat housing and screwed the original sensor in there instead. i bit fiddly but it works. also i changed the clutch slave to a verto one. the dizzy hole has a blanking plate on the spi, but if you unbolt it, your old dizzy will drop straight in. other than that, just swap to a carb manifold and carb.i used a hif44. fitted mine with a stage one kit and its been fine since. hope this helps.

Be sure to have the correct 1275 primary gear to match the drop gears on the 998 transfer case. The 998 primary gear won't fit the 1275 crankshaft.

I take it you want to replace the whole engine/box/clutch unit.
You could, and i reapeat could, struggle with clearance because the spi is about an inch forward, infact they have a different subframe.
As above, its a straight forward job if you bin injection stuff and run it on carb + dizzy.
Retaining the ECU and injection stuff will require either the spi fuel tank or the fitment of a leccy fuel pump and some messing around to make it work properly, but nothing really hard to do.

Cheers psychobob, really useful in particular re the water sensor. I'll use the verto clutch out of the 998, as this is practically new having the engine just suffered from oil starvation! The 1275 will have a new oil pump! Manifold I should get away with because it had a stage 1 kit on it, but I will need the larger car. The 1 3/4 Hiff44 seem to be the one. bmcecosie - the 1275 came with its own gearbox, so won't be using the 998 - that may be a bit worn now! and jaydee - I'm 'binning' the injection stuff. Thanks so much though all of, I've got a much better understanding now. Will post wanted add for Carb, radiator mounting, engine steady bars etc. :D
