4 - Sell up all of my cars. ( I have considered this!!! :ohno: )

Should this become your preferred option Dave, let us know how much you want for the green machine !!  :-)  (probably couldn't afford it now, but you never know!! :D )

Keith

Will do Keith. It will be more than you sold it to me for unfortunately. Not just because of the work and parts I have added, but also because it's now a proven top 10 nat B road rally car so that does add a wee bit of BS to the price.  Plus the engine hasn't been cheap but I could always sling a standard engine and box back in if required.  Hopefully it won't come to this and I will work out a way to keep all cars and maintain the status quo with motorsport and family life.

Hi, Congratulations to you all. You will do well to mess about with cars with 3 little ones. We had 2 and the mini went about 15 years without being touched :D .

Cage wise, personally I would definitely go weld in and with the bars going from front legs forward towards subframe mounts. These apparently are designed to stop the front wheels getting friendly with your feet and legs. I also learned from Rob at minisport that when they put a weld in cage in they cut the roof off and then weld back on O_O ......which certainly put me off converting my nicely painted clubman.

Cheers and Yes, I've realised there is precious little spare time.  I see 4 options to solve this issue....

1 - Try and make time and get it done myself (I'm currently trying to do this one)

2 - Pay someone else to do the work (can't afford that)

3 - Stash the cars in the garage and revisit them when I have time....18 years time then!!! (not keen as I will probably loose the motorsport bug and do something else)

4 - Sell up all of my cars. ( I have considered this!!! :ohno: )

As for the roll cage method.....Not keen removing a roof skin from a completely brand new shell. The other way to do it is cut holes in the floor and lower the legs of the cage through the car so you can get the cage low enough to get the welder on top of the joints...then bring the cage back up and weld the holes up and plate over with a spreader plate as per the MSA requirements. As long as the spreader plates cover the hole completely I see no issue with strength loss...whereas removing the roof does IMO. Plus, the amount of spot welds in the roof gutter is daft so no chance i'm drilling them out!!!!! I toyed with the idea of removing the skin from the crashed shell but the amount of spot welds way crazy and I gave up after 5 minutes....just wasn't worth the hassle so I sacrificed the roof skin and rear panel to save the rear 3/4 panels instead.

Hope all is well with your toys???

Believe the way you suggest about dropping legs through floor is the way they do Escorts. The interesting thing when I was talking to Rob at Minisport that he was saying harder to put a bolt in multipoint in than a weld in so although the weld in was more to buy it was cheaper to fit!! So he was saying about £2k fitted including cutting the roof off and back on O_O .

The black clubman featured on here is good. Just fitted an electric fan and some new seats. Ought to to post some pictures really. Son and I have done 1 classic tour in it and doing another next week.

We have done a couple of stage events in the 106 this year. Missed 2 events at Donington. 1 cancelled due to the snow  and 1 we were on holiday. Actually trying to sell it as we have another mini shell.........

Hi Dave, A belated Happy New Year. Hope all is well with you & your family. I bet the ‘young un’s are keeping you very busy, but I do hope you are able to do some rallying this year. All the best.

Hi Richard..... An even more belated Happy New Year to you too . It's been a while since I've been on here as you'd probably guess!!!! But yes the kids, house extension, landscapers ruining our patio and car parking space etc etc have indeed kept me busy and it's still not over and done with! But, there has been progress of sorts.... Post to follow.

Hope you are well and keeping busy? How are the cars doing?

Kind of an update, just not for the actual car build (that's still on hold thanks to a heap of house building/landscaping work)

In readiness for going stage rallying (my ultimate goal) I took advantage of a deal Motorsport UK (what was the MSA) had on their "go rallying" packs and bought myself one earlier in the summer.  This is the first port of call for anyone wanting to dip their toes in the water of stage events and gives you all the information required to go and book your BARS (British Association of Rally Schools) test....which I did.

I'm based in right on the edge of the Peak District near Macclesfield so my nearest BARS test centre is Oulton Park.  Yes, I could have gone to a proper "rally venue" for a play on some gravel, but this was purely an exercise of passing my test and nothing else.  Plus, i've got a fair bit of road rallying under my belt, so i've had more than a couple of skids on gravel before - so the nearest test venue was my plan!

The day itself was very straight forward - sign on for 09:00, quick briefing with the people who were there to do a "Rally Experience day" which entailed questions like, can you put a helmet on (Yes), have you got any family with you (No), have you done stuff like this before (Yeah, just a bit)......and then we were off to the the rally area which is in the infield of the circuit.

My guide for the practical element was Terry Pankhurst who is well known within Rallying circles and actually went to school with my step dad. Recently he's known as the owner of a rather strange rally beast - an Evo that's been mated the Kelvar front and rear of a 205 T16 .....youtube search his name and you'll see what I mean.

After a few laps of the two rally stages in the Toyota GT86 (which are fantastic by the way) Terry signed me off and was more than happy with my efforts.  He then took me round for a few fast laps which had me giggling like a school boy and loved every moment of it.  Practical side done, it was off to the conference centre for the written test which consisted of 20 questions over two sections testing you on stuff like the signs and flags you may encounter on a stage and what to do in certain situations like if you come across an SOS board.  All stuff that is covered in the Blue Book and I got 20 out of 20 so happy days, I'm now BARS'd up and ready to apply for my licence - which won't be until 2020 as we're kind of running out of year now.

Next step - get on with the cars!!!!!!

Ha ha.....He's a nice guy and man can he chuck a RWD car around!!!!!!  I'll try and catch up with him at the Neil Howard stages in a few weeks (assuming he's around) because I asked him if he knew my step dad through rallying.....he wasn't sure. But then I found out they went to school together....probably his old age catching up with him....ha ha!!!!!
