a nice (mild)day in winter is probably the best time to paint outdoors - no pesky insects! very shiny parts

Have you got a screen rubber from Phoenix trim? I've only heard good things about them and their communication is top notch. I'm waiting on delivery of a couple of items from them myself.

No but thanks for the heads up. I have since contacted them and after a long and very interesting techie conversation, I have a windscreen rubber in the post. I will let you know how I get on

Again thanks.

I'm taking full advantage of it!

OS door painted... I tend to work a bit random

Grille fitted.... took some time to get the "best fit"

Bonnet buttons are a bit more refined than rally look pins and better suited to this build

3 jet washers fitted. No stock originality here, sorry guys

Sprayed the back of the Cibie's black gloss. Body colour looks great on Escort's but I'm not a fan of it on Mini's

Morning Pete, can I ask where you got your washer jets from? I was thinking of getting some that would fix to the wiper arm but finding them difficult to find that will stay on the mini's wiper arms.

Hi Keith, Linky for you.

I had to mod the holes on the scuttle panel to get them in.

I'm very impressed with Phoenix Trim. The windscreen aperture was slightly modded on Mini's from 1990. It's not easy to see but the curve around the top is different. As a result, a wider flange seal is needed to accommodate this especially when fitting a thinner screen as is the case on this build. It's a breath of fresh air to speak to someone who really knows their stuff and delivers the right part at the right price! £12 isn't exactly pushing the boat out and the seam is vulcanized not glued.

Screen went in without any problems.... it's easy when you have the right screen and seal.

Later Mini's were fitted with a plastic membrane over the inside of the door to stop water ingress.... I'm not convinced this is the right way to go. I think the best way is to seal up the apertures and ditch the plastic sheet.

I've used butyl to seal any holes and covered it in "helicopter tape" This is good stuff... google will give you the answers.

This is the butyl sealant

Applied to apertures

I cut thin plastic to fit the openings...

I will tape these on to stop them moving. Butyl goes soft with heat.

OS door sprayed with Dynax whilst upside down

This is inspirational. I have another question, I can't remember if you replaced your door skins but if you didn't how do you make sure the insode of the door is painted properly? I'm just wondering how I am going to do mine save submerging it in a vat of paint. :)

Thanks 1330RG

Jase, I skinned both doors and the boot. I masked the lips and sprayed the middle with 2k. I then brush painted both the lips on the skins and the frames with zinc primer.

The most important bit is I folded the lips over whilst the paint was wet.

Pics show it better......

1864_zpsb7npdyje.jpg

1865_zpsees5bqwf.jpg

Both the door and boot skins had a couple of tacks to hold them in place when built. I didn't bother with this as it burns the paint off. The seam sealer I applied around the lip joint will be much stronger than a couple of tacks.

It seems a long time ago since I did that! It seems oh so long ago I was at this stage too!

Basecoat

Clearcoat

1867_zpsnnqwqdxf.jpg

It's been a long journey and a lot more work and hassle than I ever imagined. I'm on the home straight now

OS door is on

1868_zpsi4ympztn.jpg

Just needs the glass and latches fitting.

Glad I went the extra mile on the NOS door and boot handles. Lot's of cheap stuff around but these are genuine

1869_zpsyhw9wscn.jpg

I's all paneled up now, Still a few things to do and a snagging list as long as your arm!

I also need a LOT of parts, mainly engine ancillary bits

Next up is the short block / head build. Yup Minisport screwed that up and all but I've started again.  My wallet is now about a grand lighter but it will be right when it's done.

Thanks for looking,

Pete

Great work Pete!

Some very interesting ideas to keep for my own 998 to be built in a (later) future ;)

I already saw con rods polished on the whole surface after balancing, the goal was to avoid cracks starting between two peaks on a certain surface.

Once polished, there are no mounts to be seen, therefore no cracks can start there.

Do you plan to do sthg in this direction?

I hope I am clear with what I try to explain ;)

Gold wheels would really set that blue paint off - and goldplate the chromework!
