my oil temp gauge indicated the temp to b normal whilst motorway driving (i.e. bang in the middle) when i drive in the city it doesnt seem to go up more than about 1/3rd of the way. slightly below the mid level. is this normal? or has my thermo gone? maybe its the thermo. maybe its the gauge. maybe its normal. which one? i do not know...yet! :smartass:
Kind regards, V
thermostat? oil temp gauge misreading?

the engine and gearbox, and therefore the oil are doing a lot more work on the motorway, hence it gets warmer.
so the answer would be yes, its perfectly normal.

cheers 4 the reply bluebottle...
i was kinda logically thinking along them same lines... but even after an hour or 2 in the city it stil only goes 1/3rd of the way up mind. idve thought itd reach the middle by then? it does not overheat tho. i.e. does not pass the middle marker. does anyone else have this happen to them?

:erm: erm... i have a 2 dials on my "dash" (speedo and fuel/oil temp - i think!) im quite sure its the oil temp?? i have also just realised i have a slight oil leak... around 5ml leakage overnight. (probably quite a bit more when driving around!) maybe thats got somink to do with it. i do keep an eye on the oil level and keep the oil topped up though...although what bluebottle wrote seems to make perfect sense
