just do different things... i wouldnt take that much heed.
I.e 2 way could be mid range and tweater etc.

1-way speakers only have the basic cone, and only deal with one type of sound (bass/treble/mid), think of subwoofers.
2-way have the basic cone, and a extra 'mini-speaker' mounted in [usually] the middle. These deal with 2 types of sound.
3-way are very similar to 2-way, except they have 2 'mini-speakers', ya get me?
I don't need to explain 4-way.
