Yeah there's very little in the way of the coil doing its job, but what there is could potentially be expensive, looking at the lamda/oxygen sensor and relay pack specifically. Only 3 cables used on the coil pack out of the 4 pins. Brown/pink from the relay into the coil, White/Grey and White/Black out, feeding to the ECU twice, via the instrument pack (tacho clock).

Relay next?

After many months and failures we have finally concluded the it WAS the ECU. There were many wiring problems that were fixed, but each fix never changed the outcome of how many cylinders fired. Many said for sure it was the ECU and many said the ECU is rarely, if ever, the culprit of such a problem, but it my case it was. There could have been a bad wire to the unit that caused a short...

The tach was an independent problem (wire again). Now I have all gauges working and 4 cylinders. I'm limping on a borrowed ECU/5as/fob at the moment.

Trying to decide now if I should just

1) buy a used ECU and use the ACR4 module to sync it with the alarm unit
-or-
2) try and find a used ecu, fob, 5as
-or-
3) send mine off and have it repaired and have the alarm/immobilizer removed

Does anyone have any experience with any of these options ESPECIALLY using the new scanner to sync a "strange" ECU to the alarm?

Suggestions?

Thanks again to all who helped me through this process. We have to add a stabilizer because of a broken bolt and once that's done I can finally hit the road on all 4 cylinders! It's currently in post from England!

I would personally keep the immob and alarm - has not really "security" as they are they offer a deterrent at the very least. Just get a new ECU in there, plenty of those around.

Thanks. So you suggest just getting a lone ECU and trying the sync option with the ACR4. Any experience with this working?

The Sykes Pickavant ACR4 will not "sync" an ECU to an alarm box /key fob combo. The ACR4 only "talks" to the ECU not the alarm module. The Rover Testbook is needed for any changes to the immobiliser system.

Thanks for the reply. Important information. Can you elaborate at all on that? That certainly changes my direction. I was leery of buying a replacement ECU and that route not working.

Several members have quoted using another ECU with their existing alarm box and key fob. AFAIK there were a limited number of combinations which may explain this. I don't have more info on this and I don't expect others to post any as it is best to keep what little security features there are secret.
My point is that the ACR doesn't have functionality to reset anything to do with the alarm system, it works on the ECU alone.
If it was me I would have the ECU checked/repaired, a search in this area if the forum will throw up some Companies who specialise in this. Likewise if it was me I would keep the immobiliser function.

The SP G2 pod with iKeys when used with an ACR4 will indeed sync ECU/ alarms and add additional fobs.

Or at least the manual has specific instructions on how to do this. I have not yet performed this operation, but I am confident that the system does indeed perform this function. It better for the money that it cost.

Terry, not many have iKeys functionality let alone the G2 iMAP pod for their ACR4. Rane if you have this I stand corrected.
I too haven't tried this functionality as my G2 alas only had the iMAP subscription ;-) as I couldn't justify the cost of iKeys for my own use.

I was able to purchase a refurbished G2 with iKeys  for an almost reasonable amount. Currently Ray(rane) has my older ACR4 with the Rover pod. If he needs the G2 pod, it is available to him to sort this out.

Sounds like you have a way forward! Get another ECU and get coding! You should b able to pick up one for much less than a matched set (ECU, alarm box and fob).

If anyone knows of an mpi ECU source or someone who might want to sell a working spare, please let me know. I'm not having good luck at the moment.

Dont forget its the weekend here, and a lot of places/small buisnesses close at weekends...daft i know, but give them time to reply.

Have you thought of getting an after market ECU, then you cant map it to any future upgrades to the engine?
