Hey all, just wondering if anyone can advise what size tank I really need to have for stage rallying? I'm fabricating it from ally, and can get between 25l and 35l quite easily, the smaller the better but obviously don't want to run out!!

Depends if you're going to do single or multi venues rallies where there may be a lot of road miles. It's always good to have the extra capacity just in case you need it :-)

True- it's not going to weight much anyway so may as well make it big enough to accommodate more than needed and half fill it!

With it foam-filled slop should not be an issue.
25 litres would be a bit small as that is only just over 5 gallons and at around 12 mpg on stages that's only 50 stage miles (plus a small reserve).

How does this "foam filling" system work ?
Sorry if im being old fashioned but only heard of baffles being used.

You put a huge piece of special foam in the tank and it stops slosh! It takes up next to no space in terms of volume so you don't worry about capacity. Only thing is you can't use a standard type fuel level sensor with it as it would not be able to move!

I did a Historic International rally in Belgium in a 1071 Cooper 'S' and at that time it appeared that the FIA Historic regulations required foam filled tanks in Appendix K Group 2 historics. I thought this a bit strange as even modern Group N didn't require this, only Group A. So I called rhe RAC MSA Tech Dep't and they said, and I quote, "Don't be silly Peter, that's only for moderns".
When we got to scrutinmering it became obvious that foam-filled tanks were needed. However, one of my service crew was a Met Policeman. He got a dyno-tape gun and put notices on both filler caps saying 'Foam Filled - Fill Slowly'. The scrutineers didn't even look inside the tanks, they just said "Foam filled, is good". So we passed OK. My 'cop' friend said that people usually see what they expect to see and that is so true.
The regulation was clarified later after I called the tech guy at MSA, who apologised profusely.

And we got a 7th overall and first in the 'up to 1200 cc class' as well. It was my car, but the driver was Bill Rogers from California who now owns the car and keeps it in the warm sunshine. I just read the pace-notes and did the navigation.
Great times!

Yes, I have had a great life full of fun with both rallying at international level in some great cars, especially the old Datsun 240Z and Mk.1 Escort, plus flying for sport in both powered aircraft and gliders/sailplanes.
I figure that at 72 I'm a bit too old for competitive rallying as you young guys would 'blow me away' or I would crash trying to outrun you. But I can still fly my glider and am involved in rally marshalling and helping younger drivers to compete whenever I can. And I still have a workshop full of Minis.
I'm proud of my son who works in F1 as a design consultant and who was/is a fantastic rally navigator and a very good driver. He also started off his rallying in a Cooper, later a 970 'S' plus navigating me to several wins on Historic and Endurance rallies.
