HI, I'm new here and am looking for a mini to fit a bike engine in, anyway i was doing some research and i saw that BMW make bikes with prop shafts wouldn t that be easier and better for a conversion on a car?

The engines are quite powerful maybe not as much as other bikes but it gives you a propshaft which means you can fit a proper diff instead of a chain drive.

Anyone done this or knows about a reason why it s not as common as an r1 or busa engine (apart from power)?

Plenty of bikes other than BMW have shaft drives, Honda Pan Europeans, Goldwings, Cx,s, Moto Guzzi, Kawasaki GTR1000, Yamaha triples, and many more. Nearly all are tourers/customs without the all out horsepower of the sports bikes, which i think is the idea of fitting bike engines.

I see so basically all bikes with a prop are slower than those without.

I am going to see a mini this week and common problems i should look out for? it s a mk4

Rust ! Loads of threads on here about what to look for, best to ask else where other than the bike engined section.

also be carefull with the size of the engine most beemers use boxer twins on there shaft driven bikes which are really really wide, is this possible in a mini?

well twin cam s are also wide although i think boxer is wider.I only saw the K1200 and it has an in-line 4 16v engine i don t know about the width of the engine but the bike is 850 mm wide so it s less than that.

Does anyone make diffs for bike engine, i mean a diff that is driven via a sprocket and outputs power to shafts ?
