Hi i am new to the turbo side , Just wondering what spec i need for a daily drive simple turbo set up with a bhp around 90-100bhp , would this be ok for a daily drive set up wit a low boost looking for a similar spec to metro turbo . I have a mg metro engine at the moment which needs a rebuild i have a set of 21262 pistons which are unsed will these be ok if i dont need a rebore for a higher mileage turbo or would a set of 21253 be better. Could someone suggest a set of pistons and what sort of mileage people are getting out of there .

dunno what the 21262's are, 21251's are not very good, 21253's are the turbo piston and damn strong.

100-120 hp should be nice and reliable, basically go for std metro turbo spec, but with a better head and a decent intercooler. 10 psi should get you where you want to be.

Oh and fit a 4 pin diff!

What sort of mileage will you get from a 8-10psi engine with 21253 pistons and what is fueling like on turbos .

well theres no reason that you shouldnt get 30-50k from it, assuming you dont constantly drive it like you stole it, and change the oil reguarly.

a well set up turbo is capable of returning 40mpg+ on the motorway at around 60mph,

Thanks very much for the info . What turbo is best I have heard the t2 is the right size for a 1275 and do you have to cut the bulkhead away or are the manifolds available and is there a lot of bits needed to set up the turbo .

mirage manifolds allow you to fit it without making bulkhead mods but it is a tight squeeze
t2 turbos are tiny therefore your almost constantly on boost

the whole low boost low power thing will go out of the window when you start driving it lol

http://www.turbo-mini.com/62147.html -> WIL H's 20hr 998 turbo conversion
is what you want to read

read it, then read it again, have a look through the website
and then anymore questions he is on this forum and turbominis.co.uk

Thanks for the reply I will have a read through this article . So will I still get a good mpg and 30-50k mileage from the t2 turbo being on boost so often as reading about the t3 seems that it is not really for a road car .

depends on how you like your power delivery
i like to be kicked in the chest, the real feeling of "coming on boost"
the t2 is perfect for a 998

yeah mileage shouldnt be a problem, around 40+mpg depending on how you drive it
are you bolting it on a used engine?

those 998's go on for everrr if they have been looked after, would advise
new headgasket, 12g940 head, new water pump and oil pump and oil change and should be a reliable good engine

Well I have a 998 in my car at the moment which has done 92k and I have a spare 1275 mg metro which needs rebuilding as it has a chip taken out between two of the surface bore so will need skimming and need pistons maching because how deep the chip is But would this be ok for compression on a turbo . Would this not be better suited to rebuild and fit a t2 .

If you skim the Block you raise compression
Turbos need to be low compression due to the turbo pressure
Can get away with it though depending on piston cc's and abit of head work

I'd change the head gasket on the 998 and all the other bits and run it till you get bored/ while rebuilding a powerful 1293 turbo motor
You can use the head off it for the 998 for now

Ok thanks do you run a turbo engine at all will 100 bhp be reliable as I have always had a 998 which starts all the time mainly because I believe I look after it and service it all the time but
It going to be a daily drive doing 8k a year or so. And I will be using 21253 pistons are they ok for the cc dish to get the compression

Which depends on power you want lol
Ie. boost
Should be ok for 7-10psi
Which will get you to the power you want but worth double checking

How much are 21253 pistons to buy? Personally I'd splash out and buy omegas! Then you will know your not on the limit

i took my na 1293 and just had some headwork done to get my comp to 9.1:1 (ish) ran 10psi on a T2 and 125bhp and was a right lil trooper.

think it ran the 21251 in it just fine
