Hey guys,

I am still fairly new to car modification/motor racing and have decided to throw myself in the deep end, so now I am preparing and tuning my Austin Min Mayfair (1985) for track day/weekend use and eventually into motorsport. It might take years of tweeking and living off of Alpen and coffee but it's going to happen!

Anyway, I have a few questions regarding turbos with a 1275cc engine.

1. Would you advise it? If so, what are the most ideal options I should look into?
2. What other areas should I check before installation/which areas should I strengthen before making the adjustment?
3. If anyone has gone for a turbo in the past, what steps did you take?

Many Thanks!
- Tom

Yeah go turbo :D

Check out turbo-mini.com
And READ EVERYTHING!

And then if you have any questions get yourself over to turbominis.co.uk

I'm currently building my turbo motor :)

Upgrade you brakes to 4 pot to stop
Then check everything else is in good condition
Everything else can be found above!

I'm no expert, but do know that Turbo engines will have an 'equivalence' factor in most motorsport disciplines (the engine size is multiplied by a certain factor when forced induction is used) - this may take you into a different class thus competing against larger engined cars. Don't know how competitive you want to be, but something maybe to bear in mind.

I shall now hand over to those much more knowledgeable than me!

Thanks for the responses so far.

I've already set my mind on a brake conversion kit which will also included the necessary brakes that you mentioned. I'm more worried about any minor parts that are easily overlooked under the bonnet! I'll head over to your recommended websites and read up. I probably won't be looking at making the change for a while, but I'd rather do 7 months revision on it first because it'll all go badly if I do it at the spare of the moment! The guy I bought the mini off had recently had a Stage 1 kit added, again, I'll be upgrading that in a year or so too. In theory there should be little for me to worry about in terms of old/new parts, but then i'm not that knowledgable!haha

keefr22: I hadn't even thought about it, so thank you for alerting me to that! I'll definitely take that into consideration.

I think you'll be better building a small bore turbo, they take the revs better and tend to be more reliable

A turbo engine would be great, but just have a think what sort 'motorsport' you would like to do once you get bored of trackdays.

Some forms of motorsport won't allow turbo's so might be better developing a monster carbed engine instead.....just something to consider, but i love your research method before jumping in with the credit card...very sensible.
