I have a 1340 engine with a Inertia type starter motor. In one of my previous posts I had major problems starting the car that has been traced to two different faulty starter motors. Hare is the problem I have got a replacement starter but it is a 9 tooth Bendix. The two faulty ones are 10 tooth, I have fitted the 9 tooth and the car starts faultlessly now. No one I ask can tell me what starter I should be using either the 9 or 10 tooth. I'd like to know which one I should be using before I cause any damage to the new one

Thanks in advance :)

The way I understood it was standard the ring gear has 129 teeth, 9 on starter, but that 10 was also offered with a different chamfer on the pinion to mesh with the 129 tooth ring gear, but I have heard instances of a higher wear rate on those who used the 10 tooth

Also Minispares also list the correct type as a 9 tooth inertia starter here http://www.minispare...|Back to search for all cars pre 84/85 when they went pre-engaged

That's kind of the assumption I came to.... The odd thing is that I think Mini sport only stock the 10 tooth.

You need the 9 tooth to give you maximum turning force. 10 tooth was fitted to the metro.

Excellent, thanks, so I'm not going to damage anything by using the 9 tooth. Doesn't explain the jam, but hopefully that was a one off.
