Hi guys, couple of weeks ago the last fuse on the right blew a couple of times I replaced and the car worked fine, yesturday I was reversing off my drive and she cut out again, went to replace the fuse and she blew it straight away, now the car won't even start it turn over without the mems relay fuse blowing..... Help!!! What could be the cause how's best to diagnose this? A friend said it might be the starter motor but I'm unsure. Has anyone had this before? Is it a garage job?

Cheers in advance guys

Your best bet would be to check the the circuit diagrams for related gubbins on the same line. I had a short on fuse link 4 due to my interior light cable getting shredded in the door stay, and the ECU grounding cable earthing back form the fog lamps (share the same grounding point, thanks Rover).

I'd say check your ECU earth point in the first instance and re-sit your relay's connectors.

Have you checked here to see if A4 is fuse 4?http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/topic/251403-fuses-by-location-circuits-covered-data/ if so its the dim dip circuit

I have the same problem with the 30 amp fuse blowing, now it blows everytime I start the engine. Has anybody found a fix for this? I am going to test for bad earth/short circuits on the weekend, anything specific I should look for? I have gone through 5 fuses so far. (I have not changed anything on the car).

Car is a 1996 cooper mpi.

A fuse will blow to protect a component from being damaged. So if a fuse keeps blowing then the source needs to be identified before you keep driving......unless you have an endless source of fuses lol

For bad earths look for any earth terminal that is corroded or broken. there are PDF documents attached to this section of the forum that show you all the locations

Thanks for the info.

Checked all fuses, replaced FL4 30 amp in engine bay (the far right), checked earth for ECU is OK. However, Fuse FL1 30 amp in engine bay (far left), with the fuse removed there is still a circuit across the pins, other fuses there is no circuit with fuses out. Car starts and runs fine, can drive it up and down driveway but any significant engine load blows FL4 fuse every time.

Really stuck now...

Any more suggestions welcomed.

Had a really good look around today, removed the 30AMP fuse for the lighting circuit and so far so good. However, would really like to know if there is someone who has resolved this...

Hi guys, solved mine, found it It was a bad wire that's charging the alternator, the hypo cable that goes from the starter to the alternator is dodgy and keep blowing the fuse, cleaned it and its running fine now and battery warning light nothing.... Will keep u posted if it happens again.

had a mpi a while ago that poped fuses, and it was the engine loom where it had been routed incorrectly in the engine bay and had got melted on the exhaust manifold

That's always one to check for as well, my manifold gets hot with a stage one!

Daniel,

I had the 30A engine bay fuse blow. It was the engine bay loom chafing as it feeds through the triangular hole in the metalwork on the top of the inner wing near the MEMS engine ECU.

The 12V comes underneath the car, to all the 30A engine bay fuses, and the fused 12V is then fed to the relay module in the engine bay just in front of the driver.

The cure I found was to wrap the section of harness going through the hole in split conduit.

Hope this helps...
