im 18 and when the current insurance runs out in september ill be 19 with two years claim free driving. i havent got any noclaims due to being a named driver but a do have 2 years named driver experience and have no convictions or restrictions. Ive also done pass plus.  Its currently my mums car but i would like to buy it and therefore would need to insure it in my name. Its currently insured with footman james with me and my dad as named drivers. Ive tried to get a quote from Graham Sykes and they came back with 2579!!!!!!! (currently paying 1000 and have unlimited miles). Also on a 1.9tdi golf i am paying 1300 in my name and comprehensive so how does that work out?

Ive not really looked at the main stream insurers yet but have seen footman jameses new policy and will get a quote from them at himley on sunday.

I meet all the criteria. Its a 79 car, im in the mini club, ive got no claims or convictions, the car is kept on a drive, i have my own car and its insured for commuting, ect.

It states that they can give points for advanced driving qualifications, club membership and mechanical competence? How is this judged? For example the mechanical competence. I have no mechanics qualifications but i have restored the mini, done all the servicing and maintenence, rewired it, fixed it several times at the roadside and know the car pretty much inside out now. I am an engineer and have qualifications for that (higher diploma and currently doing foundation degree as an apprentice) so does that count?

Any one who can help with this or who has taken out this policy your help would be much appreciated as with the quote so far it looks like i wont be having it!

cheers Rob

It seems once you get to age 25+  its much cheaper, strange and unfair how you can insure a more powerful modern car for less than a Mini.

I know that's what made me get one! Been looking since September at various cars that I can have as a daily driver as although  I adore minis commuting everyday in a 33 year old car can be difficult and I've had a few early hour finishes to fix something ready for work in the morning!

I had looked at focuses and a few other medium sized family hatches as these are all a lot cheaper to insure than the typical corsa fiesta ECT despite being far more powerful and fast.

I spoke to footman James at himley and they're going to phone me back with a quote although they didn't seem to know much of the details about the policy

Also interestingly (and annoyingly) a friend with an 84 mini has just been quoted 500. His circumstances are pretty much exactly the same.

I think it was through Adrian flux. When I phoned and asked it came back at 2k! Seems strange I have got comprehensive quotes on a rover 1275 in my name for just under 1000 but my 998 is twice the amount!

Just had another look and been quoted exactly 1000 by hyperformance through confused .com. Not spoken to footman James yet as they never phoned me back this was with alloys and stage 1 declared. Which made a few quid differance.
