Hi All

I have just bought a late 2004 Mini Cooper convertible.

I noticed that the radio reception was terrible, so, I tested it with a new radio and everything worked fine......until I drove off.

What I then realised is that the reception is good, unless the engine is running. This is a problem as for my style of driving, I like to have the engine on!

Has anyone come accross the same fault and / or know how to fix it?

Thanks.

Check that the ignition HT leads are all the resistive type, a legal requirement in all of the EU, and are in good condition. There should also be a suppression capacitor connected between the engine block and the coil positive terminal, and possibly one on the alternator. Fitting SHORT heavy flexible copper braids between the bonnet and shell, ideally one at each hinge position, may also help.

There are other things to try, but these should be enough to get started on the problem.

Oh, and you should check that the radio earth is connected properly to clean metal, and the aerial is also earthing properly to the roof, or wing, or wherever your model has it.
