Hi.

 

Spend at least 2 hours reading through various sections in here!

 

PURISTS: PLEASE LOOK AWAY NOW!!

 

Our "learner driver, budget scrapper" is nearing at MOT (and we've got an L2B ticket!) . http://www.theminifo...eally-too-much/

 

 

He came with a rather nice LG CD player with ipod/aux input lead, which is going in a centre console alongside the all important CB radio.

 

At the moment there is a heel board under the back seat with some very crusty old Alpine speakers in, so my plan is as follows:

 

Step 1; buy a pair of 6x9's to put in that board

 

Step 2: mount some component speakers under the front dash

 

This is purely so we can play some music (mostly rock), NOT enter sound off competitions, and I dont want a sub and amp (sorry).

 

So, is a pair of JBL GTO 938's OK in order to complete step 1 and get some music playing? At £40 a pair that looks good money, but I'm open to cheaper and indeed second hand solutions.

For bare minimum single set of full range speakers without an amp you placement will be most critical.

The more power you have at your disposal the more lax you (potentially) can be in placement because the power will allow you hear the output regardless, by varying degrees.

 

Your best option if you're set on dash mounting and not open to some speaker pods fitted under it, would be fitting some 5.25" (ideally 6.5" but they take up a lot of dash) components. Your ears point forwards, point speakers at your ears - disregard this if you have ears on the backs of your ankles.

 

Should you be open to making up some pods to go under the dash rail, then 6.5" would be best bang for buck (bigger cone better bass response (all things being equal).

 

Secondly is what speakers you put in, taste is very personal and components sound very different. If you can get along to a Halfords or audio shop and listen to some Maiden on different sets that's the best idea. Pick the ones that give a pleasing sound to you, within your budget.

Yes some brands are better, but they also have their own sound.

Yes this should be fine, the only problem is that the 6x9s Are rated to 100RMS and as you can't supply that you will be clipping them, But that really doesn't matter as it is only £40 a set.

That's incorrect, you can't cause clipping by too little power. Otherwise your speakers would be ruined by playing at low volume.

 

What will cause clipping is over driving the internal amplifier in the HU, pushing it to supply more power than it can or pushing more power through a speaker that it can handle, note this can be far above the rated power and often is.

I guess you're right.

 

But lets be honest, In a mini you need to have the volume quite high to kill of the sound of the road and engine, And 6x9s will want more than the 20watts that the HU will give off.

There's 2 different points there, the first being that how loud your road and engine noise are in directly proportional to the preparatory measures you've taken against them and how fast you're going / hard you're driving the engine.

The second being that the HU could have easily in the realm of 50 wrms to supply, but that point is moot given with suitable prep 20wrms is more than audible while driving not to mention that speakers don't "want" for anything (except maybe a clean signal and a nice mounting surface).

 

We're straying off topic here, sorry about that OP. Although the point about prep is valid, the less countermeasure you have against the road and engine noise the less you'll be able to hear the speakers but with them sitting in front of you and pointing at your ears you'll have the best possible chance :)

The fronts will be in MDF "cabinets" under the dash rails, so I like the idea of large as possible components. The old Alpines can sit up front temporarily I guess.

 

For now I'm going to fit the rear 6x9's, so I am OK with those £40 pair? I can pop into Halfrauds later and stick some AC/DC through them, not that there is anything wrong with a bit of Maiden!

Lots of people seem pretty pleased with rear, floor mounted 6x9's. Couldn't offer suggestion on the position or the models you're looking at myself.

 

What I can tell you is that you'll be hard pushed to even notice them once you have the fronts installed.

 

If your head unit has a pre out (RCA lead thingy) I'd really really suggest looking for a cheapish small sub, even an 8" at a push with a built in amp and use that instead of the rear 6x9. You'll get much more out of it, in my opinion at least.

 

I'd leave the crusty Alpines in place, look to some 6.5" comps for the front and never look back!

Lets be honest, if you're listening to Thunderstruck - you're going to need a sub, aren't you?!

You really can't go wrong with the price and quality of JBLs for the price, Have a look into the JBL6508c They are the Matching Comps to go with 6x9's good bang for your buck!

Can you give me a clue what make/model please; happy to give that a try, perhaps under the rear instead of the 6/9's?

Will have to have a look around, you can make a suitable enclosure under the rear seat for an 8" sub though. It won't blow the doors off but it will give some punch.

 

You could use the 6x9's as your bass drivers but you might have to get a cross over to cut out all the high end stuff for that. That might be a cost effective route but I'm not sure on the viability of that, will need some investigating.

Lanzar speakers are the best speakers i have every known of. They are a partnered company with VIBE, these speakers are by far the best out of all my other friends, in terms of wattage, crisp sound and incredible bass (without any distortion), some people think i have a sub!

 

The bulks you can buy on eBay are very well priced as well, for the product they are.

They are only a few mm too big for the rear speaker holes, so i just raised them up with some soundproofing...

Lanzar speakers are the best speakers i have every known of.

You forgot the word 'Budget'.
As in the world of speakers Lanzar are not even on the first page compared to many of the top manufactures.

I'm going to be working away for the rest of the week so might start by popping into Halfrauds and having a listen.

 

I've also taken onboard Scortchios comment about perhaps starting in the front with some decent 5.25 components (I know a chippy who can make me some under dash pods) then decide what to do about the rears (perhaps some bass rather than 6x9's

 

.. and even that Silent Coat isn't exactly a cheap option for sound deadening, as I need to do the floor, back seats, under dash etc as all the original stuff was removed when we stripped it for weldingm so I've just thrown in the old carpet for the MOT.

 

Perhaps a chat with a few people at L2B will help.
