Silent coat too pricey you say, let me assist :)

Couple of  things to note, I went so far overboard on the flashing tape (mass loading) that it's not even funny. 25% coverage is plenty ;-)

Also you don't need to block sound on the back seat / doors / roof as such, you only need to deaden the vibration. That said some 1" foam on the roof between the headlining does wonders to stop the rain deafening you!

Scortchio

that's great; many thanks. I'll pop to Screwfix and get some flasing tape, and I've ordered some foam from that buyer on ebay.

If you are doing L2B, drop me a PM as I'd love to talk to you!

Mike

No worries dude, glad it was some help.

I'm not going to make L2B, away on a cruise next week and some work to do on the new install so doubt I'll make it.

I'm over in Essex myself if you ever swing past this way though. ;-)

Lanzar speakers are the best speakers i have every known of.

You forgot the word 'Budget'.
As in the world of speakers Lanzar are not even on the first page compared to many of the top manufactures.

I didn't know how much was budget  >_< I got lucky with mine as i won them on ebay brand new for £11  :P

thanks Iain and Ruckus; this is a minefield!!

I'm going to be working away for the rest of the week so might start by popping into Halfrauds and having a listen.

I've also taken onboard Scortchios comment about perhaps starting in the front with some decent 5.25 components (I know a chippy who can make me some under dash pods) then decide what to do about the rears (perhaps some bass rather than 6x9's

.. and even that Silent Coat isn't exactly a cheap option for sound deadening, as I need to do the floor, back seats, under dash etc as all the original stuff was removed when we stripped it for weldingm so I've just thrown in the old carpet for the MOT.

Perhaps a chat with a few people at L2B will help.

A note on silent coat and dynamat. People over do them a lot. Dynamat did a demo of a single strip of deadening on a cymbal. The single strip deadened the whole cymbal completely  So you dont have to go for 100% coverage, so it wont cost as much as you think. Also people think the deadening will stop road noise. It wont, it stops vibrations, by adding mass to panels. You need to isolate and block, with closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl, to stop noise. A  bit overboard for you but still, silent coat wont make a huge noise difference.

A mate was given a roll of silver 'silent coat' type stuff for free, so plan for this weekend is to paint the floors, then try some of that under the carpet and see what it's like. At the moment it's got capet on bare metal, but having put a layer (or 3) of shultz undercoat on the underside it really isn't too noisy in the car. Am going to use the shultz gun with primer on the inside floors, the paint over, then try the 'silent coat' with carpet on top. We are NOT trying to build a sound-off car, just something to do the rock music some justice!

The new 6x9's are in the rear under seat board for now, but with only bare metal under the seat they don't sound great (but at least give us some music).

Then we'll have a go at making an under dash speaker box for the components up front.

Happy days; thanks for all the comments and advice.

Remember its absorbes vibrations, it wont reduce road noise (much, if any at all)!

Understood. The Schultz primer will help with noise.

ok folks; running out of time for L2B car prep as it is; front and rear floors covered in schultz grey primer nice and thick, left to dry for a week, then I've hand painted some cellulose over the top of the front (bloody weather; would have done rears last night!). Then I'll add the sheet of silent coat type stuff I was given, with some tape over the joints.

I've fitted the JBL 6x9's in the rear kickboard, and no chance of getting the front JBL 500c crossovers in a made box by the weekend.

Simple question; should the rear 6x9's be in MDF boxes to get the best out of them, or is the cavity under the seat sufficient? .. and if MDF required, how thick, and does anyone have a picture for inspiration?

MANY thanks

Mike

I will be at Crystal Palace on saturday if you fancy listening to my system. It will prove to you if nothing else that in a car you only need sub-bass in the back.

I should be at the palace quite early and not to difficult to find. You will find me in Brighton no problem, Show'n'Shine section H, blue classic mini with a big silver stripe through the middle. Make shure you have a CD with you that you know well.
