there are less than 2000 metros on the road and i own one

They just HAD to get a mention of Princess Diana in there didn't they

 

Very surprised there are apparently only 291 Allegros and 310 SD1s on the road when all Practical Classics does is bang on about them.

 

Sad thing is most of these were throwaway budget/family cars and therefore not meant to still be on the road now. I think it's just prestige or cute cars like Minis which fared better over time. Good on those who are keeping them going though, I've always wanted a Metro

they did a little report on bbc breakfast about this yesterday morning too.

 

as some of you know, i own a mk1 metro so this topic is of interest to me. but quite recently i did have quite a few of these cars that they have mentioned, such as.....

 

an imaculate morris ital with less than 30k on the clock (that was stolen and hasnt turned up in 5-6 years)

 

a 2 door allegro, (sadly this was really rotten so i kept the engine and binned the rest)

 

a marina coupe, that was also a great car and is, i beleive, still going strong.

 

but my little metro is possibly my favorite car i have ever had, and i have had LOADS! lol

It will be sad to see the Rover SDI disappear:- but a lot of those cars have gone for a reason. They were bad cars when new and even worse now. Why any sane person would have paid money for an Austin Allegro is beyond me.

Sad to see both Montego and Maestro on the list.  Feels like a good reason for me to buy another of each - shame I don't have the storage for them

my first car ...  I have fond memorys of it - nah - my one was Carp

Minis have survived for the same reason that you see more old corsas and fiestas than you do cavaliers and sierras - they are cheap cars to run. There is always a market for small cheap cars. Sporty cars survive for obvious reasons. The top end survives as well as Astons and ferraris are always worth something. The middle is always under represented. After all why drive a chevette when you could have a Capri? or a dolomite 1.3 when you could have a sprint?

makes me laugh when people knock Allegros, Maxis, Marinas, Minis Metros.. all the BL stuff shared a lot of the same parts, so in  away if you own a BL car and ******* off all the other models, your slagging off 75% of your own car.

 

ive heard a LOT of B/S about Allegros popping out windows if you jack them up. what people dont mention is that they jacked them up in the WRONG place.... then what do you expect.

 

Marina trunnions snapping..... cause nobody cared to lubricate them.

 

the lists can go on and on. BL cars were no worse then any other cars in the 70's and early 80's. both my Maxi and Allegro are still here going strong and niether has had or will ever need major welding cause they were wax oiled from new,... by BL.

 

most of the problems lay with how the cars were put together in the first place.

 

my Dad was telling me about the amount of drive shafts and CV joints his Allegro used to eat, he showed me a photo and straight away you could see why, it looked like a 4X4 it was that high, Turned out the Dealers were pumping it up too much on purpose to get him to keep coming back for more work. 

 

In the end he decided to teach him self Mechanics and repair his own cars.... he never had any more trouble.

The later SD1s (Vitesse) were leagues better than the earlier models. I would love to have one when I'm a little bit older and wiser!!

These all went because they were crappy road cars but awesome on the banger tracks!!!
