looks like an S head, theres somthing stamped by the thermostat housing (should be 12g1805) but its not an S block.

can't see any cam follower inspection covers

its not an S engine as there's no tappet chest covers, and the petrol pump would be an electric unit so it wouls be still cast blank, nor is the dizzy correct, looks like a 1300 austin princess or late 1275 GT

The Mk3 'S' had that (ie solid without tappet covers) block and an electric fuel pump but the distributor is wrong, it should not have vacuum advance. The 12G1805 is the correct head for a Mk3 'S'. The 12G1128 gearbox is correct for a Mk3 'S'. It was also fitted to the 1100/1300 but with the sandwitch plate remote so if this is the solid remote it is most likely a Mk3 'S'.
Edit: Just noticed the very strange looking top hose and radiator, just does not look correct for a Mini.

All Mk3 'S' engines had the solid block with no tappet covers. Engine number started 12H397 when fitted with dynamo and 12H398 with alternator.
The solid block was also used for many other models (eg ADO17 Riley etc.) and 1275GT.
The 'S' and 1275GT had the solid remote change and the others had the sandwitch plate remote.
The Mk3 'S' had hardy spicer drive couplings and all the other had rubber couplings.
Like I said above, the top hose looks wrong for a Mini and the distributor is wrong for an 'S'.
An engine number would be helpful to identify this engine.

For goodness sake man how many more times are you going to repeat this piece of erroneous information? It is just plain incorrect, the Mk 3 Cooper S block had tappet chest covers.
The engine on offer is worth nothing like $2500 here in the UK although it does depend what type of $ you are referring to. It is a real bargain if in ZWD $.

This could actually make it a bit confusing
Engine
A genuine Cooper S 1275cc engine can be identified by the two tappet chest covers on the rear of the block, in common with the small-bore engines. It has an extra cylinder stud and cylinder bolt visible outside the rocker cover, and the rocker cover has two small cutouts to accomodate the stud and bolt. Drilling of non-Cooper S cylinder heads to "11 stud" spec is common in performance applications.
Non-Cooper S 1275cc engines are identified by the lack of tappet chest covers, the area being solid for improved engine rigidity. The S engine should also have a duplex timing chain. Some export 1275cc engines may have had the solid tappet chest covers common to non-Mini 1275cc engines (e.g. in the Austin/Morris 1300), though this has not been confirmed.
Considering we are talking $ seems likely this is an export one...it does say the solid tappet chests covers not confirmed

This piece of general ignorance comes from a publication that indicated nearly 20000 Mk 3 Cooper S's or Mk 3 S engines had been built. The highest original Mk 3 S engine number is lower than 1600 and BL built less than 1600 Mk 3 S's. It may be that Innocenti Cooper 1275 engines were counted along with Mk 3 S units.

i also thought the mk3 "s" had a solid block too?

The chrome rocker cover and 41242 distributor indicate this is the later Austin Vanden Plas Princess 1300 65hp engine. So it will have the 1300/1100 sandwich plate on the remote. It is not an S engine, nor is it worth 2500 but with a set of twin HS2 and decent exhaust manifold it will make a nice motor like the 1300GT with 70hp.

these mk3S engines are the fore runner to the 1275gt and were inferior to the older and as most of us know cooper S Blocks with open tappet chest with EN40B cranks and AEG117 conrods
