Hi guys

Since getting a K &N cone air filter for my mpi cooper, i have wondered how to make the engine bay look 'good'

Is it normal for the engine block and head to be rusty? (i mean flakes of rust come off if i dig around with a screwdriver)

How would you smarten up an mpi engine bay? and any tips to keep it 'clean'

Cheers

Elliott

Yes the engine block/head paint flakes off over time and the surface of the exposed metal then starts to corrode, which is why so many people tend to smarten up thier engine bay by repainting the block.

Take a look at this guide form the FAQ section, it's aimed at earlier carb engines but should give you the basic idea. http://www.theminifo...gine-bay-guide/

Yes true, the Mpi engine bay is much more cluttered with whole host of extra components, but the basic premis remains the same. If you're planning an engine bay face lift, you still need to remove as much as possible, degrease, mask, paint, then refit and tidy. A few shiny components from somewhere like "Smiffy's Bit's" can make a big difference too.  http://www.smiffysbits.co.uk/

It's fairly straight forward to strip an mpi engine. Just make you photograph everything and label each connection. This will make it so much easier to reassemble

fairly easy to strip an mpi engine bay???????? really. what about all those little wires that are everywhere?

to be fair i took off the sound deadening foam off the bulk head, because it got wet and thinking the rust gremlin would appear. that was easy enough

Like I said label everything. Ive stripped my engine bay before and reassembled first time without any wrong connections etc. Just got to do it in a methodical way and be patient lol
