Hi, I have an 84 mini 1000 which has a distributor with electronic ignition.Today on starting car was dead (battery charged but no turning over) smoke then eminated from coil and I found the wire from pos side of coil to fuse box had melted. When I took this wire off fuse box engine turned but naturally didn't start. On putting it back on more shorting. The coil I think may be the 9volt ballasted type as this coil has been reinstalled on replacement engine now with electronic ignition, So is the short and melting of wire likley to be down to coil not being correct, the wire to dizzy from coil seems ok, would this short have melted the module. I have no idea of make of the electronic ignition.any help appreciated as don't know if need to buy a coil

I suspect the fusebox is knackered and shorting on the bulkhead.

what colour was the melted wire, if white/pink they have a reputation of melting.

Melted wire white to fusebox from coil, top left terminal on box then under it another white wire which I believe comes from ignition switch, didn't consider fuse box itself may be earthhing

I would check the wiring and if its a ballasted system with a white/yellow and white/pink on the coil + they can damage the wiring harness so check back along it if that type.I would do a standard 12v coil conversion with a new feed from the white terminal on the fuse box to a new 12v coil.
