Hi all
I need some help.
The car in the attached picture is what i just brought as my first car (smart !!)
Thing is, the guy believes that it may have been an old police car at one point..
Although he has been unable to confirm this.
His reasons seem simple enough..
(1) The car was resprayed in Old English White but the original (u can see in a chip in the boot) is a blue.

(2) The stamped engine plate contains a   P   at the end..

although i am not currently in the possession of the car (get it friday) i have seen this for myself.. and will post the engine number when i get it..

But basically i wondered if anyone had any idea of how to find out such a claim may be true.

Because if it is i'd love to restore it to original spec !!

Please help..

Thanks

similar question ?

never seen a clubman being used as a police car - but have seen corgi models - so their probably were some

I should imagine the wiring would be the best way to see if it was a police car

I used to work on police cars in the 80's & 90's

there were holes in the roof & usually higher spec alternator / battery , the headlining would have a zip / compartment in it

& a radio pack would be bolted somewhere (usually behind rear seat) & wiring run to the front

I should imagine DVLA could find the original purchaser for a fee ? - https://www.gov.uk/g...ation-from-dvla

Aha funny that you found that link, judging by the username and the other mini he mentions

as well as the time frame of the post it was the guy (jason) i brought it off,
and he says that data protection has held back him founding out any more information about the previous owners..

Thanks for your info
will DEFINITELY be having a look for the things you mentioned,
only problem that i see is that the interior has been refurbished so i guess the headliner is out the question..
but the other info is very useful thanks. :)
hope i get to find out

Was just trying the obvious Google search and I wonder whether you have seen this:

http://www.theminifo...ct-year-of-car/

Look at post #7

May be a typo, but at the end of the thread it does certainly turn up a Clubman so this guy might have bought a ringer!

I think the guy in the other thread bought a ringer unfortunately with your plate. As he says the electrics in the car are like a late 70s/80s car, boot latch and wipers are dated in the 80s, engine is an A+ etc etc. And of course Coopers weren't made in 1972. Anyway his car is in America now so I wouldn't worry too much, especially if you have all the documentation.

Sorry I can't help much with your car other than tell you it was first registered in Norfolk. However as the new owner you can send off for the entire DVLA history file which will contain names and addresses of all the previous keepers, for just a fiver. I did this with my Mayfair and it was fascinating reading! :D

Hopefully that is his number plate and as it is slightly different to mine.. JUST.. :/
But yeah i have all the documentation (will do friday) and it was the first thing we checked. before even looking at the car.
It fascinating just reading all these little things about where you can find all the little stamps and things.

Im not sure but i think Jason the previous owner tried this and didnt get very far although im not 100% but will send off myself as id love to know the history.

How can you tell that it was first registered in Norfolk.?

O.K .  I would just be very careful with this car. Possibly having 2 cars with the same identity is very dodgy, especially since one of them is a known ringer.,  Have you payed for it?

Triple check all the documentation, plates and stamps. Do you know how to easily tell a 1971 Clubman from a later one?  This may be a ringer for tax avoidance. Please be careful.

I hope its all fine and you enjoy your Mini  ;D  :D

You mean hopefully it's YOUR number plate! His is a 1980s car shipped to the US pretending to be an old Cooper.

The 2nd and 3rd letters are 'AH' which means Norwich.

The guy i brought it off said his mechanic did some checks but id rather do some myself..

Thanks for that..
My twin sister studies in Norwich atm so im sure if she doesnt like the car i can swing her round with that little fact ;) aha

Chassis/VIN number stamped somewhere? At the end of the day a Clubman is a Clubman so at last you know it's from the 1970s as they only made them in that decade!

The history will tell you an awful lot about it, plus there should be a bit of paper in there saying when the colour changed. What type of blue is under the white?

If you can get some more photos of the car I'm sure people on this forum will be able to recognise all the age-related parts and whatnot and tell you if anything isn't original :-)

From what i remember.. it look something like the blue of the car in ur signature.. I THINK please dont hold me to that.. i will upload a photo tomorrow evening/ saturday of the actual colour.

and the DVLA says that the colour was changed in 06 according to that post from Jason ^^^^^^^ linked above
