Silly question but what mark on the dip stick should oil be filled to ?

oooh don't start that argument 
If you don't know when the oil was changed or you have no evidence then I would do a full change not a top up.

anything 20/50w mineral oil will do, I prefer the castrol stuff, but halfords classic will do fine. Ooooh the sweet sweet smell of castrol

I am sure it is also about 500ml between minimum and the maixmum line.
